This game had always been an enigma to me as it had a bit of good for every bit of bad and when asked by friends why I didn’t like the game I found it hard to explain that I didn’t dislike it I just didn’t like it but you managed to put my thoughts on the game into a simple sentence. “The most 7/10 game ever made.” Anyways, loved the review! Keep up the good work
Great review Craig, insightful as always! This is definitely a game that I have a hard time assigning a numbered rating to, as there is so much contradictory stuff going on. As a game, it's a mess with a lot of cool elements that are often held back by technical problems. As a narrative, it's very interesting as while the plot is fairly simple, the characters are what carry it through to be compelling and motivating. As a world, it's one of the best realized out there and really makes you feel like you are in a future that has been well thought out (which makes sense given that the tabletop game has been around since 1988).
To clarify, I played on PS5 on release day and completed the game and most of the side content over a few weeks (I got the Panam/Aldecaldos ending).
The combat is definitely fun and varied in what you can do with your character. I ended up being a melee-focused stealth character who made a lot of use out of the microfiber whip. Ironic, given that it is straight out of Johnny Mnemonic, another cyberpunk movie starring Keanu Reeves.
I agree with your assessment that the cars handle like ass, luckily the radio stations are all great so they make it a little more bearable. I also just ended up using bikes since they were way easier to maneuver.
Johnny Silverhand is great, even if he is a little inconsistent. Keanu Reeves is Keanu Reeves, meaning that the acting isn't technically very good, but he's so charismatic that it makes him fun to listen to. I thought his backstory mission was one of the best in the game.
The world is so good, and just makes me want a proper open-world Shadowrun game! While the setting is a little generic since Cyberpunk was one of the first of it's kind to model itself after Isaac Asimov's, Phillip K Dick's, and William Gibson's work. I often found myself able to forgive the technical shortcomings since I am just having so much fun in the world!
Overall, I'd have to give it a 6/10 technically, but with a massive personal recommendation. It has a lot of problems, but is also a boatload of fun to be in and just immerse yourself into the setting and characters. I'm sure that the many updates have been kind to it, and can probably raise it to a 7 technically, but I haven't played it since my dad has the copy and I'm too lazy/broke to buy to again lol.
Stumbled upon this channel by complete accident. Great video! Keep it up <3
