‘Cyberpunk 2077’ May Combine Free DLC And Next Gen For A Soft Relaunch

Well, it’s August, and as ever, we have no information about either free DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 or the next-gen launch of the game, both of which are supposed to be coming by the end of 2021. The longer this goes, the more I think plans might be changing, and if they do make it out by the end of this year, it might be at the same time. The plan has always seemed to be to release the free DLC first, possibly staggered like we got with The Witcher 3’s weeks of free DLC. Then the next-gen relaunch would be later. But the longer this goes, the more it might make sense to simply combine these two things together, and to market PS5 and Xbox Series X Cyberpunk 2077 as more than just a visual update, but also a time to return to/pick up the game because of new content that will be launching for the first time. Again, expectations are that this free DLC is nothing major. We are not talking about a large Hearts of Stone-style expansion here. The content of the free DLC is likely a smattering of weapons, clothes, cars and Cyberware, along with a few new gigs and maybe some quality of life features (character appearance modification!). To me, this late in the game, it makes more sense to package these all into a single bundle, not stagger the release, and simply put them live alongside the next-gen launch of the game, which is a free upgrade to current owners. For someone like me, who originally beat the game on Xbox Series X, running the Xbox One X version, it would be nice to return to the game to see both the visual and performance improvements and actually have new stuff to do at the same time. If it was four months ago I would just say release the free DLC first, but the delays have been endless, and it still doesn’t seem like CDPR is about to announce anything. Quest designer Paweł Sasko made an obvious joke about DLC timing in his last stream and had to come back this week to be very clear it was a joke and he would not be talking about DLC at all, even in jest, going forward. That does not sound like something that’s about to be imminently released. CDPR’s roadmaps have been totally pointless, so it’s anyone’s guess when all this is coming. As more and more delays push games out of this fall, it should be an okay time to launch the next-gen version alongside free DLC, and again, I really think this is something that’s going to occur simultaneously at this point, but we’ll have to wait and see if CDPR agrees.
