I'm not quite sure if you caught the grasp of Mitch's situation, but he's pretty much embarking on a suicide mission.
Just as a refresher, the Basilisk requires two pilots (gunner and driver) since the physiological stress it places on one's neurons is lethal for a single pilot to manage.
So, not only is Mitch fighting off who knows how many Militech enemies, he's also on a time clock before the Basilisk kills him.
On Militech weapon mechs shoot the arms first.
