I woke up one morning and had this same thought. Is Johnny dead and what I’m seeing is a duplicated digital simulation of his consciousness? Or is it more Ghost in the Shell and his consciousness was digitized and transferred to a new vessel. And on that same day I run into these two Buddhist monks who I helped earlier in the game. They give their perspective.

Hmm… interesting conversation
Thanks fir posting
Id have to ask my buddy but don't Buddhists not believe in the soul?
I think that Johnny silverhand is dead but the digital contract is now a new individual who just has the starting point with Johnny died. digital Johnny will grow to be his own man or not based on his wants and needs
Boudhist adapt to dominant ideology really easly.
Did teh buddhist Finaly acceppted the cycle of life and death???????
The true question is : Is the copy cappble of progress?
Have you found any cool legendary gear?
A very Christian take on Buddhism considering you don't have to die to attain nirvana (the Buddha didn't anyway) and that the soul isn't really a static thing.
Im sad found this so late in my play through because it perfectly demonstrates Johnny’s ‘live in the moment, don’t think back’ mindset that the game likes to explores. Johnny may have lived like that but in his death he’s forced to look back on what his life accomplished. After he sees how nothing he did really matter he’s able to change himself for the better (His relationship with V also really helps).
