Should AAA Games Like Cyberpunk 2077 Use Early Access for Development?

Early access development has its ups and downs, providing some of the best titles over the years along with some of the least compelling. While a massive RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3 benefits from feedback over a longer period of time, the same principles just can’t apply to a different game with a different pipeline, developer practices or publisher expectations.

It’s a difficult problem to solve, one that requires sacrificing profit, either short-term or long-term, for the sake of developers and the overall quality of the product. Whether most companies are willing to make that sacrifice while revamping their internal policies and practices will continue to be one of the biggest questions for triple-A development in the years to come.

  1. Should reviewers actually pay for the games they play so they know how it feels to pay hard earned cash instead of appealing to the company with fake positive reviews to not get blacklisted so they receive more free games in the future.

  2. Well in a way, what they released (and then unreleased on PS store) is an early access version of Cyberpunk until the next gen patch. Certainly I'm treating it that way and they are getting a LOT of feedback atm. I'm not touching cyberpunk until the next gen patch lol.

  3. They clearly do. If games came out as buggy as they do now in the PS2 days before patches they’d have not been bought. They clearly use the initial purchasers as QA testers to report bugs to them because there’s literally no consequence. FIFA comes out buggy every year and sells and outrageous amount of units, same with every other big game because they just don’t have to care.

Unless a game is completely knackered and unplayable, they’ll have a legion of QA testers who have essentially paid the company to tell them what they can fix

  4. Even if cyberpunk wasn't buggy or wasn't virtually unplayable on last gen base model consoles it would still be a massive disappointment regardless of how fun the game is which it is btw.

  5. Honestly it’s kind of a double edge sword because early access could work in theory problem you still have to pay for early access and that’s not fun that feels like a complete ripoff however early access could also work in some games favor like cyberpunk but we shall see.

  6. We beta test and alpha test 90% of games last gen sick of buying this bs. I alpha to beta test free since 1992 and most times they give you something. I retired testing cause consumers do most now. Fing disgusting many indie games early access on pc but label full game on console and full price. So many never finish early access so f u unsubbed

  7. This game was just made by devs who are inexperienced. The lack of water physics well physics in general as you can jump out your super car driving at max speed and you will land on your feet without a scratch. Lifeless world without mini games and npcs that come with the ps2 era of complexity. A wanted system that should have been left out of the game I mean cops who spawn behind you and in walls. No one is around to witness the crime don’t matter they see all. Horribly balanced weapons that break the game. No amount of early access will help them understand game development.

  8. If you go by the statement of the CDPR head honcho, CDPR has hired the MOST inept QA testers in the history of gaming.
Looks like the QA team was unable to file defects that are visible with just a few hours of basic play to even the most brain dead consumer who pre ordered the game.

  9. I think if reviewers put more emphasis on these bugs more, the developers and publishers will get the message to polish their game before releasing it. So instead of giving a game a buggy game a 9 to 10 score maybe lower it to like a 6 or 7?

  10. the short answer is if it's not done shove it in early access that way people get proper warnings that there might be problems and the company still gets it's money for the game and doesn't get mass whined at

  11. The better question is should they have their privilege to sell pre-orders revoked. And the answer is yes. Selling preorders has opened the door for incomplete and dishonest AAA games

  12. When a game is called a 'live service' that means active development will continue after launch which is the same thing as labeling it 'early access', and this is true for any game that's still in active development after launch like watch dogs legion or CP2077, as apposed to TLoU2 for example. Publishers are going to do what makes them the most money and since these are 'just video games' and they know they'll never be held accountable for releasing buggy unfinished games they'll happily continue as they are knowing consumers will continue to shell out money even though they constantly complain.

  13. No. Games should just release when they are 100% done. Don't normalise this beta or unfinished or early access or live service or any stupid schemes for lazy devs. All their time and focus should be solely on making the game. Period.

  14. Short answer = No
Like, why would anyone be willing to pay full price for an unfinished product that could've been subjected to false advertising and marketing. I would rather have access to a free demo and base my judgement of purchase from said demo if it's something I enjoy playing.

  15. Yes I would also like triple A games to release themselves early in an unfinished state and slowly release content over the next 7 years or wait until the hype dies out and they've sacked all the money they can from the game. Oh wait, that's exactly what they're doing already cause most casual gamers are complete morons and they can get away with it cause new kids have no self respect for the industry. I'm not saying it's bad that gaming is massive now cause that's an amazing thing but people need to learn self respect instead of brand buying.
