Johnny Silverhand of CyberPunk 2077 is commonly included among the “sigma male,” and “alpha male,” subculture, and his inclusion here among others is the largest indictment of the culture at large. We’re killing the admiration, the reverence, for a character that, while he makes personal strides as an engram over the course of the game, spent most of his actual life not at all worthy of admiration, nor were his principles or ideology. The worst of this is, that I think the character themself would agree.

  1. Really liked the video, Yeah I agree with you about the tower ending. Like you couldn't take some time to call any of your loved ones before you go through with the surgery? Though I did have a different opinion regarding the storm Arasaka tower by yourself ending. The way I saw was you were finally taking personal responsibility and not evolving anyone else in what was basically a suicide mission where you might not even succeed in finding a cure.

  2. ALMOST 1000!

EDIT: Someone just pointed out something to me I actually think needs addressing. I have no problem with the idea of ideological revolution, many have been justified. What I was pushing against was revolution without a plan for a better alternative, which was what Johnny was more or less doing in his attempt to blow up Arasaka (in the tabletop, he was being used by Militech, so even more reason there). That’s why I specifically pointed out revolutions and regime changes and revolutions where the replacement was worse that what it replaced. I thought it was clear but in hindsight probably needed a couple extra sentences there.

Ultimately though, this video is more about Johnny, and people like him or people that admire him more than it is about anarchism and revolution. There’s way more nuance in either of those topics than I’d be willing to cover in a 14 minute video about a fictional character 😂

What are your thoughts on Johnny Silverhand? One of the things I didn't touch on as much in the video, I feel like the Tower is also the ending that Johnny wants for you. Does he enjoy doing the solo run? Sure. It falls perfectly in line with everything it already was, but to willingly sacrifice what remained of himself to preserve the mind of someone he called a friend? Now that's growth for Johnny.

SIDE NOTE! I've totally forgotten it existed outside of using it as a chat room with friends, but I do have a discord page that I'd love to see you guys on! I have channels for game suggestions, and while I haven't kept up with it before now, I will start posting updates as to what's going on with future videos as it continues to grow.

  3. As much as I still find myself liking Johnny because he's Keanu Reeves I can definitely see what you mean. You should try the tabletop though! The way they interact with the story of this game is really weird at best, but the games themselves are awesome!

  4. Idk I'd almost still pick the Star over the Tower in its current state. That's kind of one of life's cold realities that if you disappear from someone's life long enough, you don't really know that person anymore, no matter how close you used to be. I wouldn't say its realistic that they'd be pissed at you about it like some of them seem to be, but indifferent to you? I can definitely see that.

Also HOW DARE YOU SPEAK ILL OF MY BOY JACKIE.

  5. Oh my god this is so good including the Jackie roast because it is so true. On one hand I really like the Tower ending when it is encapsuled out of context leading to it but with phantom liberty storyline idk if I ever viewed V as a person who would want to survive at any price, and giving Myers back her blackwall poker slave doesn't seem like a good deal to me. Also you can't shoot Reed in the face and that's a no go for me so I did that ending once in like 5 playthroughs.
Stars ending is still the best ending.
I also think that the Temprance ending is the most interesting one for Johnny as a character because it makes you wonder what will he do once he leaves NC.

  6. I don’t understand the love for Johnny. Were consistently shown he was a dickhead when he was alive. And the engram of him is just that, an engram. An artificial approximation of the original in other words fake.

His memories are extremely unreliable to the point of hilarity, his engram shows a tiny spark of good in itself when you call it out in the junkyard but beyond that he’s just annoying and insufferable. Not to mention he tries to off you as soon as he manifests.

The worst part is he sees himself as some sort of activist and legend but he’s really a poser, a nobody and a cyberpsycho. And only we see it

His memories make him out to be some badass that had to take over a turret after SHAITAN (a solo famous for 1v1ing Adam smasher and living) got shot and couldn’t continue so he could carry his crew through the gig.
But if you at all read the sourcebooks from the RPGs you’d know Johnny silverhand was just some hippie smasher cut in half with a shotgun.

  7. I had the same convo with a friend earlier today actually, Told him I liked the Tower because it breaks the fatalism of the city. The idea of "going out as a legend" . It embraces reality. My friend isn't a fan because it crashes into reality and V gets mugged by a couple of punks. His words being "Emasculating ending". He thinks NC will eat V alive now. I agreed, but I pointed out nobody says V has to stay in NC. They got offered a job with the FIA. They have skills for a lot fields and a chance to start over. If Judy can make it work and be happy, so can V.

  8. You've got some good premises in this video, but it's really half baked. And I was giving you the benefit of the doubt until you brought up regime changes and anarchism. There is so much nuance in the topic of ideological revolution that you ignore. So half of your video sounds like american apologism.
