I mean, smart guns should be for finer correction so you can shoot at them and not worry about compensating for their speed in my eyes. Sort of a "Oh shit they dodged last second before I pulled the trigger, oh wait I don't need to fix my aim the bullet will do it for me" kinda thing
In 2020 smart weapons are actually modded regular weapons that use a mix of cyberware and a laser guided system but fire regular bullets. You can designate a target that when they cross the path of the weapons laser will trigger it to fire nearly instantaneously. It allows you a further level of accuracy when moving or when you have little time to aim. They wouldn't however change trajectory
So as far as knowing what is beyond your Target that is mostly necessary because using conventional ballistic ammo you are simply brute forcing the problem basically you are applying usually far more than enough Force to the projectile to get it where it needs to go and do the damage it needs to do so you have to worry about overpenetration and such, for what is essentially tiny guided missiles you are applying as much force to the job as is needed to get the job done, the missile will not be hitting the target with enough speed to penetrate through and continue on to cause more damage, you could in fact have the rocket shut itself off the moment it makes contact with the target for example I agree with most of the rest of the things you said though
I liked the idea of cyberpunk, but it was very poorly executed. 30 minutes into the game and why am I still dealing with pointless dialog? Feels like I'm waiting at the dmv.
I'm reminded of the ZF-1 from The Fifth Element. When demonstrating the machine gun component's "replay feature" Zorg fires an extended burst directly toward his buyers – freaking them out unsurprisingly – and the rounds curved around mid-flight to hit the marked target behind him.
It's really sad to have seen nothing about .50 EXACTO ammo except for that single video demonstration. Imagine the near limitless military uses for it, without needing to dump consecutive shots into your target
ok but consider this: A cyberpunk weapon's greatest flaw being its ethics is very in-genre.
"Oh, you wanna survive? here, use this! Can it kill you? Sure it can. I'm selling you a weapon, what do you expect! If it does accidentally hit your boyfriend, don't come crying to me about it. its warranty just expired by the way."
Cyberpunk does have a lot of unethical stuff just in general. It's not a particularly friendly setting, considering what the genere is normally a commentary on.
Now the actual question is do manufacturers give a damn anout morales this more of a money and time issue but very good anlayasis

Shadowrun does Smartguns well:
Indication where to swing the weapon
Automatic fire on enemies when aimed
Blocking fire when friendlies are aimed at
Not great for self defense but a multi shot grenade launcher that operated like that would be incredible
What do you think about the Adeptus Custodes?
Imma b real with u chief I don't think a weapon being unethical makes it unrealistic
I like how he didn’t just say how it can’t work but how it could work and how the downsides of it is it’s actual use in public
The guntism is kicking in when you said it was the 2nd and it really shouldn’t have
that's why i don't like shotguns in home invasion situations
"Not ideal for a self defence weapon" but ideal against glowies

Use the tech to guarantee a hit so you still have to aim but if the targets dodge the bullet can fix itself to the target
BCI might be able to help with that
The ethics of it is ideal, but realistically profits trump ethics 99% of the time, irl and to the 11th degree in cyberpunk.
Fable 2 weapon review? Month 8 of near daily requesting

If you ask me if we ever have smart guns they will likely be used on snipers as they only normally shoot a few people and target one person

I imagine that by the point you’re using self-targeting micro-missiles you’re probably past the gun safety and ethics concerns.

Those micro missiles are called gyro jet and they are real
Next breakthrough will be in optics.
They would be assault weapons… wait… 😳
I think a better idea for a smart gun would be a gun on a slight swivle, like a turret. It would auto correct the barrel towards a target.
Fun fact!; i like to think the cyberpunk's smart guns use the thoughts of the user for it
sometimes i forget that darpa is a real thing and not a kojima-ism
