Cyberpunk 2077 and The Problem of Immersion

After playing Cyberpunk 2077 for a few months now I did an analysis of the current state of immersion when it comes to the game. How does Cyberpunk 2077 keep you immersed (or not) and what can CDPR do to improve that side of the game.

  1. Also companions become lifeless after you do all their quests. They need it like skyrim how they should be able to come with you on quests or at least out of quests in normal freeroam, being able to do those animations you talked about with you like eat, drink, sit ect

  2. hit the nail on the head. the 2 things i wanted – the world reacting to your progression , more interaction and legit immersion.

and the ability to customise body. I wanted a fully roided out hulk 🙁

  3. V needs access to some of the idle npc actions like lean on walls sit at dinner ,sit at step use sightseers binoculars,I'm sure multiplayer expansion features will have emote expression Triggers.

Npcs If Stand and stare at civilian they start saying generic insults, the homeless have the most routines pick up can eat ,goto pee spot , goto dumpster, goto warm hands fire ,laydown ,sit down .
Some gang random spawn groups only turn hostile if V face them ,in public area if you walk backwards into their cone of detection they ignore V.

V needs a friend backup system like the pawn system in dragons dogma ,all the vehicles are hard coded to support passengers maybe that was for multiplayer in future but kinda pointless because V can unhalster only in passenger seat yet no npc to drive to gps location outside gigs (like roster companions in farcry)
Side activities seen but not active snooker ,pool, darts ,baskethoops and cards how about bowling even ,reoccurring street races , shooting gallery's.
I'm aware of uncomplete seeker scanner gigs to find posters and graffiti similar to tarot , 2 posters found in jig jig street 1 in the music shop ,and hidden scannable Graffiti in the maestrum nightclub toilet possibly linked to dumdum past.

  4. They really need to fix the phone. Letting you call and send messeges in real time, like in GTA. I hate that the game pauses every time i want to call somebody, or that i have to go into the menu in order to read and send messages.

  5. Its a good game (that could be better). Story-wise… it's decent but it does not compare to The Witcher 3. That story is just so good its hard for other games to compare favorably with that. Other things do detract as well, for example if its not "rush hour" in the morning/evening then the city seems a little empty.
Again, I like the game and don't regret my purchase, but The Witcher 3 spoiled me…

  6. There are actually city sims where every single citizen in the city has a daily routine, a family, a house and a job (like Cities: Skylines and Torpico) .. and you can track them one by one during their day from home to work and back … so it has been done before, CDPR just got lazy or ran out of time.

  7. Yup, was doing a gig, soon as a grabbed the guy and his clothing started clipping I just lost my motivation to keep playing the game today. Jesus, why is it so hard to fix these glaring graphical problems? I have to imagine every QA tester has ran into this issue thousands of times.

  8. For me immersion is being able to participate in what npcs do. If you go to a bar, being able to actually drink and see people getting drunk and falling to the floor. If you roam the streets, running into gang fights and max tac operations. Also we explore the lore soooo little. There's barely ANY militech, biotechnica… etc. Like LKM says, it's all in the little details. And if you're missing that, everything else, no matter how modern or groundbreaking it is, becomes lifeless and uninteresting.

  9. So true there's way more problems with CP2077 then just bugs such as:
    1) Robotic NPCs

    2) 99% of doors are locked

    3) No mini game or anything to do besides missions

    4) To many icons on the mini map to fool you into thinking there's a lot there when at least 70% are cars you'll never buy because going faster doesn't matter. Besides (4.1) its better to go slower on console to avoid the crashes that happen when you move to fast and the game has issues with loading the pixels in

    5) To many missions are to basic go to A do a thing & that's it, no little interactions like RDR 2 with the whole Downes family, its not important to the main story but it helps build the world and flesh out Arther as a character

    6) The gangs are pointless, there all the same being just a pallet swap for each other. Where say Borderlands while the different groups are just there to shoot at each group have different tactics which makes them feel different from each other

    7) In a city of crime where the f' are the cops, you'd think that the NCPD would patrol the streets 24/7 with all the crime that goes on

    8) The npcs have better clothing and cyberware then V does, how is that a thing. We're the paying customer, we're the ones playing the game not the NPCs so why do we not get the cool clothes, but the f'ing NPCs do.

    9) The game doesn't know what it wants to be, RPG? no decision matters, Open World? The world feels empty, GTA wannabe? Most of the characters, gangs & cops are a joke, Looter Shooter? Most of the loot is filler. The game needs a solid direction not trying to add everything which makes it a mess

    10) No really interactions with the fixers (besides Dexter), we just get a phone call saying hey V I'm X & I'll be annoying you when you reach a mission location inplace of an actually cut scene or any story.

    plus many many more issues

  10. Immersion isn’t really the highlight of the game for me but I did feel it at times and when I did it was incredible.
Felt in the beginning of the life paths. and when V actually eats food like when They were with Goro before his mission.

After that the city is just nice to look at. NPC’s with the same models roam the streets and don’t do anything unique, A.I traffic isn’t realistic and you can’t sit anywhere or eat food at stands or drink anything.

Basically all the things GTA has done to make los santos immersive isn’t here.
Even the radio doesn’t feel like a radio (no radio host). Even if there we no bugs present the game wouldn’t be immersive. A part of me unrealistically hopes they add more stuff or change stuff to create that immersion IN game.

Still can’t stop diggin night city though like our choom jack said

  11. I think that Cyberpunk constantly reminds the player that it is only a game. As a result, the player doesn't live the game but only plays it, while games like METRO let the player feel like they live in the world. Cyberpunk has great gameplay mechanics, but there is no substance behind them. A weak main story where the PC is not the focus, a main character without any personality, quests end abruptly without any conclusion, stupid glitches, and the inability to reenter a building. Those issues shatter the immersion.

The funny thing is that in METRO, the protagonist doesn't talk, but it handles the conversation in a way where the player knows what he is about to say.

  12. I totally agree, sure the sound is great, that music and the effects of the city but it really doesn't have the life it deserves. I'm sure they could still make some major changes, like modifying the character creator side of things by making it similar to the original plan. Allowing you to change your hair style in game, give your car or bike a new paint job, and the list goes on.

  13. Cyberpunk 2077 has a long way to go when it comes to improving immersion. There are so many vendors, but they're unimportant. Almost nothing happens at any of these places, besides already marked ones…which is unfortunate because that ruins the immersion. There needs to be more unmarked quests like the Jinguji mission and "unscripted" events (imagine the Diner robbery in Santo Domingo) as it rewards people for being curious and exploring the world.

But the most obvious issue when it comes to immersion, is pretty much what everyone is talking about and what you said in this video as well. A.I. Just like how a lot of Crustaceans eventually evolved into Crabs, any game that intends to have a big open world with lots of degeneracy (gangs, evil corporations, corrupt authorities), driving (physics & A.I), and population (NPC A.I) will eventually be compared to GTA because they defined the genre. When it comes to driving and NPCs, GTA 5 is what Cyberpunk 2077 should have striven to be at minimum, especially since it's a 2020 game that advertised itself for having a "living, breathing world". I mean, it's like how many gamers were so fond of comparing other fantasy RPGs to the Witcher and the older Dragon Age games. That's not really a bad thing because these games set the standard, so it's natural that any game that follows in their footsteps will be compared to it.

That being said, I'm sure the devs could have done this (and more) if they just had more time and better treatment. I don't doubt their commitment. But all the stuff happened and this is what we have now. Personally, I think people should temper their expectations for any technical overhauls and "reintroducing missing content." I have a feeling that they will reach a certain point in patching the game and realize that it's just taking too much time and resources away from their other projects and will stop at a point where they deem "acceptable." They can fix bugs but I think complete system reworks and narrative changes are too complex, and will most likely remained unchanged. Think about it. The game had a 5 year development time and it was released in that state. And now people are expecting very big changes to happen with just a few patches that was made in only a couple of months. Which would just mean more crunch…

  14. GAME NEEDS TP VIEW (If they add TP View most people will forget all the problems of the game ,so its easier for them to add TP than to fix all the problems)

  15. I still haven't finished the game, but I wish the gangs meant more. By that, how they react to you depending if you become allies or enemies or something in-between. I was personally hoping that would be a part of the game. Right now it seems like you just encounter a crime and the gang who controls the area is involved. They are essentially the bad guys regardless. Its no big deal, but could have really been a nice touch.

  16. 1. V. just can't identify with V. It's as if they made that character as bland as possible (maybe to appeal to a broader audience?)
    2. There are no "places of power", where you just want to pause and stay there and take in the atmosphere (the vast, flooded area of Ghost in the Shell comes to mind, where Major is wearing the stealth cloak fighting some dude martial arts style).
    3. As said, lack of interaction with the city, environment and npcs.
    4. Not enough interesting lore to read. The content, that you can read in the game is quite dull, compared to the short stories in the Wither 3 game.
    5. The music sounds emotional irrelevant to me, it never really drew me into the world.

  17. The game also needs companions. Imagine if you could go into the Afterlife and hire a merc or two to follow you around on missions and assist. Hire them and chat them up enough, maybe a romance option could open up. Also you could find additional choombas around the city in various places, or open up some companionship options with existing characters. Variety is the key!

Of course, this all requires good AI, and CDPR has a lot of work to do in that respect.

  18. I know I sound like a broken record at this point but I still think that there should have been some form of third person in this game even if there was an option ☹️

  19. hey there.. Streamed this in 4K and noted you running cyberpunk on a 1070 I would disable Screen Space Reflections Quality the 1070s aren't great with that feature enabled. just a friendly heads up.

  20. The stuff you mentioned in this video is my biggest issue with the game and what makes it even more frustrating is seeing all the groundwork which was already done. Fingers crossed we'll see these things being added to the game!

  21. I'm still playing the game and enjoying it, but I'd love more npc interaction and the ability to eat and drink in places I come across while just wandering thru the city. Hopefully CDPR will add post creation character modification. It fits the lore perfectly.

  22. I love the game but the open world uses the same technology from Witcher 3. Even the police and assault in progress function exactly like the question ❓ marks and bandit camps.

  23. Also they got a grant from the government to use for facial animations and they used the Witcher 3 tech again. Also gaming Media for years just repeated lies about how cdpr was reworking their open world technology to make a next gen open world with amazing NPCs witch was all bullshit. They were actually only doing upgrades to the engine as thwy work on the game witch led to cutting corners and way less time spent on the game and quests

  24. It really was bthe games media who reported on all this kind of stuff without doing any due diligence and we all believed it including myself because of how amazing the Witcher 3

  25. Honestly, I'm sorry I didn't refund the game when I could. In 5 months CDPR gave us glorified "hotfixes" which are just the optimization they didn't manage to finish for release and we still don't have any roadmap, gameplay improvement, official mod support nor a damn barber shop. Nothing the player were asking has been implemented. Immersive gameplay is not possible and it will never be, the AI is still non existent and interacting with NC population is not a thing will ever happen. Just have a look at how they struggled to "improve" the police experience: from a joke to a bad joke with drones… Modding is the only thing that will save this game, there are already a ton of them and some of those really makes you wonder if CDPR is even trying

  26. We've seen what's possible with emergent stories in games like RDR2, so to not have moments like that really makes this world feel like an empty shell.

  27. The biggest NPC problem, IMO, is that they're all randomly created filler stuff that mean nothing to anyone. Kill one, threaten one, help one, be friendly, be hostile, it has no impact in any conceivable way. Calling them NPCs is actually a stretch, because none of them have any individual character. They're all just mass produced ghosts that you can barely even interact with.

Rather than a huge city full of people, you have some quest givers that communicate by phone, vendors, gang members that have no purpose but to die for their loot and experience, and frankly only a handful of anything that begins to be "people".

And in terms of giving an incentive for exploration, I feel that there really isn't one. All the NPCs are empty wastes of space, so finding new NPCs is pointless. Why bother? The other classic incentive is "loot", but what point does that serve in this game? The item level system ensures that if you actually find some really cool item then it will get outleveled soon and become complete garbage, and you don't really need money either. So what exactly is the point of exploring? Why do it, other than because the city looks nice?

However, if the item system had not been a looter shooter nightmare dominated by item levels, if weapon qualities and weapon upgrades and character skill had been the dominant factor, then one could have been scouring the city for the right skill upgrade chip or the right component or the right base version of a piece of gear to put together something really cool. Would have been loreful, would have been just as fun, and it would create a strong incentive to look all over the place.

  28. I think people should not really return to the idea that cdpr is "one of us" they are still a corporation and we are the consumers. Not saying that they shouldn't be "forgiven" if they redeem themselves but they are still a corporation that "wants" our money. I just hope they show us that they "DESERVE" those money like before. Anyway i'm totally with you with all other points. They sold us an idea of cyberpunk immersive, and then sold us a product that has really low immersive things.
