My name is Thane Bishop, and I need to talk about Night City.

In this video I mispronounce a number of words and spoil a whole heckin’ lot of my current favorite game. If you somehow fall into the rare category of not having played Cyberpunk, but want to, but want to also watch a video essay about Cyberpunk, I recommend just playing it first.

  1. I been playing the Witcher 3 recently for the first time .. I’m maybe halfway through the game and I’ve used fast travel probably 10x more than I used it in 4 full play throughs in cyberpunk

  2. It's buggy & it crashes on me at least once whenever I play but I still love it.

And I'm the same way. In TW3 I was fast traveling everywhere. Hardly touch it in CP. Even if I need to go from one side of the map to the other…

  3. More n more people r realizing this game has always been great .. all the hyperbole ar launch deterred people from playing it but man, there was always an absolutely amazing game underneath those technical issues .. cdpr did something special here, just like they did with W3, but rhis one just feels different, unique, fresh.. I’m glad u got to experience it n enjoy it

  4. spoilers for the ending:
One thing about my gaming style is i always end up looking up endings. I wanted to have my first playthrough be totally raw and organic but curiosity and caution get the best of me, as I wanted to build a character around my V and find what ending would suit them best. but i can't decide between the top three. not just because they're all equally bittersweet, but because in a way you always leave night city. either through becoming a nomad and living your last days out in some random desert, or through going on an impossible space mission send off, or by letting johnny take over your body so he can start a new life somewhere else. not only is there no true victory, but you leave night city every time. and despite the plastic and bloody nature of night city, leaving it isn't something i want to do.

  6. Welcome to the club, choom. Sit yerself down at the bar, grab a drink and settle in. You're here for the long haul.

Personally, I always loved the place. Have done since the tabletop dropped years ago. Only got the digital after Edgerunners dropped, a gift from my input lol. He says its the best gift he got for me, got nearly 700hrs in since September lol.
When it comes to the fast travel, I hardly use it myself ether. Was always that way for me tho. I only use it when I'm tired irl, to go home to my apartment lol. Then log and go to bed out here.

Having said that, I installed the metro mod from the start. Puts the NCART back in, so I use that. Use it to go to Jackie's ofrenda since I usually don't have access to my car. Gets a bit scary, if you get too close to the gangoons in the area, but so long as you keep going (or go fast past) they tend not to start shooting, just hurl insults at you lol. Then get drunk. Walk back to the glen North station and head home afterwards.

If you are on PC, I recommend that mod. Also, pmo which is phone messages overhaul. Ya gota start a new playthru to get the most out of it, but so far, its been worth it for just the extra messages from Jackie.
Missing Person's : Fixers hidden gems mod. It allows you to find all the hidden gem items via a bunch of quests. Texts from the Fixers, in order like the game guide lists them. If you don't want just an icon to get to them (ie, don't want go here, track that) you can turn off the map icons and find them from the text message description of the area. You can vary reward too. I've got streetcred rep turned off because its just so easy to get to rep 50 before getting halfway thru the game otherwise lol. And, it gives you something to do after an ending and "just one more gig…" Lol.

  7. You may be unsatisfied with the view count, but the quality of this is sublime. One great thing about Cyberpunk is the hidden agendas. Most "conspiracy theories" about the game rely on examining situations and seeing past the surface. The more you explore, the more you can determine the character and true goals of the people you thought you understood.

For instance, Wakako Okada is notoriously ruthless and won't hesitate to cast aside anyone who becomes a liability. So why would she risk the wrath of Arasaka for you?

    She doesn't.

  8. 100+ hours in and I've only used fast travel exactly once. I think that was because I really wanted to complete or mission or reach home after a mission as it was very late and I wanted to go sleep.
I even used that metro mod twice but I always just use my car or sometimes bike to travel.

  9. Excellent video. Nice to see someone who played it some time after launch who was surprised at how nice this game is. I, personally, got it and played it at release… on the PS4, quite literally one of the worst ways one could have played it back then. It had issues, crashing, bugs, the works. But even in that terrible initial launch state, the game, the world, its characters and stories, it lulled me in and hasn't let go. And it's only gotten better as they've fixed and improved it. Can't wait for the DLC and to play it on my PC once I finish upgrading it. And can't wait to see more videos from you.

  10. Great vid. Has to say that the Edgerunners have really influenced my vision of the world and the game, as I’ve watched the series first. It was a great decision. Really strange feelings about this game, doesn’t seem as any other game out there. Used to think that the best game is rdr2 or tlou for me, but now I can’t even choose between these three.

  11. That's not so bad. I played a little over 300 hrs and near 100% two playthroughs before finding out that you can buy cyberware attachments at the ripperdocs. I actually thought you can only get them from drops and the only thing you can do at the ripperdocs was buying the cyberware and installing them

  12. Beautifully written.
Night City brought me back 13 years to the same feeling I had seeing the lights of New Vegas in the distance from the cemetery in Goodsprings. It's incredible how some games just have that power to evoke such feeling.

  13. The best way I heard this put was "in night city there is stuff to see, in most other open worlds there is place to be. Which while an advantage in some eg:botw, can lead to this feeling of hollowness to worlds like Skyrim, forespoken, fallout, farcry, etc.

  14. I played cyberpunk the first time a few years ago and I hated it… but after some time I thought to myself why? Why did I not like this game I was hyped for?

So I recently got back into it, or well, gave it its first real go for me. I slowed down, did random side quests and found myself just walking down streets or driving down roads. Coming across some random maelstrom group, or some tiger group was so normal? It's hard to explain. Most of the crime seemed to be in well hidden areas, where I'd expect crime. Seeing the little notes from each character talking about the plans let me taste what it was like for npcs. I'm only 30 hours in, and not far jnto the pan am stuff… but I love the game. It's fun, engaging, heck I find myself trying to go find things to do other than main story missions so I can grab that next piece of chrome.

I'm glad I gave it a second chance.

  15. I bought the game on the 2nd January 2023 and had 100% it by the 2nd February (90 hours gameplay total), and I was fast traveling absolutely everywhere. I started a second playthrough the other day with the rule of not using fast travel and have discovered a beauty of the city within 8 hours of play that I hadn't with the first playthrough. Great video essay!

  16. I live where Night City is based in and its pretty awesome to see the Morro Bay and Los Osos area become a giant city in Cyberpunk. During Christmas time, you can walk around on some nature trails and see all of the lights from christmas decorations and kind of imagine Night City in the future.
