Could we have seen a Mass Effect Andromeda redemption like that of Cyberpunk 2077 if Bioware had still worked on it? This was something a viewer asked me on my recent Christmas livestream. And well, here’s my thoughts.

  1. 2077 doesn't have a particularly good story though…?
You see I'm kinda the opposite. 2077 didn't tug at my heart strings because the game never gave me a reason to give shit about anyone or anything happening in the world. It literally just throws you headfirst into dying and trying to save your life. So the game basically says care about this character you've spent virtually no time playing as because your whole purpose is to now find a way to survive… Then you had play through the whole monotony of trying to find some way of surviving only for it to be pointless in the end anyway.

Yeah, but you haven't given me the time to give a damn about V. And yeah CDPR says V is an extension of the player, which the biggest heap of horseshit ever! With the exception of what ending you may choose, the player has virtually no impactful control over V.
It's like Jackie, kill him off early, which they spoiled in a trailer. Everyone thinking, ooo, that's probably a really bad outcome from choices you make… Nope! The game is that linear!
I genuinely don't get why people rave over 2077s story…
Yanno the game that did do it right, Red Dead 2. You spend hours getting to know Arthur and all the gang members, which makes it genuinely heart-breaking when you discover Arthur has a terminal illness in chapter 5 along with the gang slowly becoming at odds with each other. It's gut wrenching.
Anyway, going back to Andromeda, yeah, the game largely sucks and doesn't hold a candle to the OG trilogy. The story is weak, the antagonist is unconvincing, and you can tell it was cobbled together in not much over a year. You can fix bugs, but you can't fix fundamental flaws within the games core. Same with 2077. (Yes I can literally rant all day about how disappointing that game was!)

I don't why so many people seem to look at it through rose tinted spectacles like CDPR can still do no wrong, it's scarily cultish! I genuinely think in terms of wasted potential, 2077 is even more offensive than Andromeda!

  2. I think yes. While the main writing and main story were pretty lackluster, it had a great basis with its combat. With some decent dlcs and some more love and care then it could have gotten much better. There were a ton of story elements that were clearly left for dlc. Could it have been at the level of cyberpunk or the ME trilogy? No, but it could have been much better than how it stayed.

  3. If you liked Andromeda, that’s fine with me. But personally, I could not get invested in the story or any of the characters. The game did play very well, but I felt it to be tedious at times, like the scanning and what not.

Also when it came out, I was still on the BioWare hate train, so I didn’t give it a fair shot.

I went back and tried it again but just couldn’t get into it. ME3 originally broke my heart, I didn’t play through it again until the Legendary edition came out. Sorry Andromeda fans, but it was a game I absolutely could not get into.

  4. I liked Andromeda. It had really fun combat, and the story had its neat moments. But that said, MAN did it stumble on some key points. Like the ending, which had some good stuff too don't get me wrong, but my dominant thought the whole time was "Why is every faction so happy to be here?". Like the psuedo-pirate faction; Last I checked, I pulled a gun on their leader and got kicked out. Why did they come to my rescue? The game just sort-of assumes certain actions were taken despite giving me the choice to make other ones. The complete lack of connective tissue or justification doesn't even feel lazy, it feels like the developers either totally forgot that you could essentially sever all ties, or they didn't have the time to do anything about that fact.

Honestly, if the ending had been more coherent and the characters just a little more memorable, I would have loved Andromeda. It had a unique feeling completely unlike Mass Effect 1-3, in some good ways too, and it benefitted from the nuanced world of the Mass Effect universe without negatively impacting the core lore at all. I loved seeing the Turians and the Krogan again, and I really enjoyed the little things you could do to help the arks and nexus. It isn't Shakespear, but it can still be a good time.

  5. Dlc would have gone a very long way to improve the story/lore and have us end our playtime on a good note, much like all the Inquisition dlc did. But it wouldn't have completely made up for the weak main game.

  6. Yes it could and I'm tired pretending the contrary. Tired of all the hate, the trolls. I understand what you mean, even if I disagree but I was just terrified by some commentaries on this video. By reading some people, the harsh words, the threats to the developers or even the hate is justified. Just NO. We have examples of games salvaged by time and work from the devs except Cyberpunk.

I just hope one thing : that Andromeda helped and pushed Bioware to do better and in another way, not because of the hate but because they know they can do better and in their own way. I also really hope that we could get back to Andromeda, I want to see the partnership of the Initiative and the Angara defeating the Kett. I want to see the Ryder legacy, how his/her actions as a Pathfinder would impact deeper in Andromeda. I keep my saves. Things can get so much better with appropriate and humane development

  7. Do you think that an Andromeda (spelled it right!) sequel could have been made with better (continuing) storyline/characters? Or would the precedent of the first drag it down (or make it incoherent with the first)?

  8. Too many poor decisions were made and the game was too broken, then they never followed up with story elements that would have helped. They tried too hard to make a break with the prior trilogy.

  9. In order to save andromeda the team behind it needs to give a damn from the start while cdpr was rushed they stuck with it didn't just move on to the next thing and now we have a very different beast than what we started with and a new hatred for Adam smasher EA much like thier other works didn't care about this not even their bigger money makers like madden what it all boils down to is EA forced a smaller branch of their company to work on something they had little to no experience with while what was left of the original team worked on discount destiny in order to save something you ha e to at least care enough to try

  10. The Kett were like a B-movie version of the Reapers. They had the opportunity to do something new but they chose to follow the same path as the original. Big, bad villain with genocidal ambitions and a chosen one to save the day….,same shit, different galaxy.

  11. I honestly think that if the story dlc was to be released, it could’ve turned around to some degree. Unfortunately, the story and characters were not that good. I personally really enjoyed Peebee, Drack and didn’t mind Cora or Vetra, the others were pretty meh imo. Game clearly needed more time to flesh things out more. Who knows how much stuff was cut and or was planned for dlc. But like you said, cyberpunk had a good story and characters at lunch, just was broken to all hell lol.

  12. I thought Mass Effect was fine, wish Ryder would become more confident and stand up for himself more and more throughout the story… Definitely still needs some updates.

For me cyberpunk gets kinda boring after a while, still can't seem to get the iconic Samurai jacket only to realize that you get it towards the end of the game which kinda sucks.

But if they added around 20 gigabyte of content in Mass Effect Andromeda then I think it could be close to the previous mass effect games. Also hate that Quarians weren't in MEA.

  13. Remove all of the wokeness stuffs in MEA & add "actual story" for the game, then they may have a chance for that. Basically, not happening….
I prefer the chance of Bioware "fixing" ME3 endings tbh. It's way more doable imo…
