The Cyberpunk 2077 release was a disaster. What were the roots of this failure? Why did this very high-profile software project go so badly wrong and how could the software’s producers have avoided it? CD Projekt Red is the studio that produced the release, in this episode Software Engineering expert Dave Farley examines the publicity available evidence for what went wrong from a Software Engineering perspective. This was a failure of poor management and bad software engineering,
This is a high-profile example of a very common way to fail in the delivery of software. The consequences are always high, how could good software engineering make a difference, and how is that related to better business performance in this case? This was a failure of business strategy, culture and software engineering all of which could have been helped and improved by DevOps & Continuous Delivery (engineering) thinking.

12:31 Rockstar Games is a better example
Thanks for the lesson.
Idd say the game Engine is bad
Grea vid learnt a lot
The game is actually running good now after just a few updates so this guy has no valid point
Nope. Only management killed it, like in EA before with Anthem, like in Bethesda with Fallout. Only people with rights and ownership of company but absolutely no knowledge about developing. And thats it 🙂 kick managers and problem will be solved.
Its interesting that this video taught me a lot about myself. I'm the sort of person that never reveals my plans. Whether its when I'll be online for a gaming session, or when I wish to study for a test. Why? Because I know that I have a real problem with 'Time'. I hate commitments, moreso when they come out of my mouth. Instead, I'd rather work on Scope at my own pace. Commitments give me anxiety. Its not a good way to live for sure, but I'm learning.
You just described Rockstar Games approach as the ideal.
Ps: you have been awarded by youtube's algorithm. Good luck riding the wave.
I haven't had many crashes or anything but there is alot of weird glitches and objects floating but my issue is with this massive but dead world. There's no reward for exploration. Missions seem rushed the world is empty and there's nothing to do there's no mini games or nothing to spend money on really that matters. The a.i is clunky at best and you can't even interact with npcs at all this game just completely missed the mark they tried to make it to many things and didn't do any of them well
Worst A.I. and NPC I've ever seen in my life. Cyberpunk 2077 needs to call Rockstar Games for help.
Punishment should go for the amount of crunch that is put into developing the game not the game itself.
A lawsuit for the game having so much bugs in all platforms (Stadias one of those platforms that had slipped my mind until now.) that the game is running in is too much damage as is.
The people are over their must've have been needing to go home and take a long rest but, instead took all their time into developing the game.
The game isn't 100% the problem but the immense amount of time to develop it, that is the problem.
Yes, I get software failure is a very very massive issue, but having people all taking excessively long hours to develop the game with hardly any rest is a huge toll to suffer through.
I am not a gaming developer myself. I am learning to become one, but there has got to be new ways to get people to work on massive games for the next generation.
But, I also think we should also give extention of time to the last gen consoles to the people that are still willing to develop games for those consoles, too.
I want gaming to not follow new products all the time.
I want gaming to lower their prices and give opportunities to even work with even the best of developers and collaborate with them. Big projects shouldn't be made by one studio, but many and that is the problem.
I want money to be easy to manage as we become developers of our own games. And I want there to be open opportunities for any kind of collaboration when developing them.
Like comics. Comics was a huge collaboration of different medias in a book.
Some people think you wouldn't get much by just being a comic artist, but I want to prove not only those people, but everyone wrong about comics.
I want comics and video games, and t.v. shows and movies to be one massive collaboration with worlds of different sorts imaginable and unimaginable in one.
People should have their own will to add or subtract into this new world what should live, die, and rebirth. Worlds of old deserve to live just as long as new ones.
I know it is a pipe dream, but I need to know if people can just stop relying on one studio for one thing and actually give a helping hand and collaborate with them.
I have to bring back that comic ideology, because it worked beautifully before and I want it to work the same in video games and other media, too.
What does this "Continuos Delivery" even mean??
Correction: Sony took it of the store as soon as ppl wanted refunds.
Correction: Keanu reeves is also a character in the game not just some marketing gimmick.
This has to be the worst presentation ever.
I don't think the issue is CD. CD automates deployment and tests yes but what were those tests ? Maybe they were just testing Hello World. I think the underlying problem is someone has been lying. The developers could have lied about the tests or features. The managers could have lied that the game was ready. The fact is the fiasco started because the company lied about state of the game.
Wow FINALLY no ranting but actuall explenations!
Question: are you familiar with David Graebers (RIP) "Bullshitjobs"? He descripes how Marketing and Managementlevel pulls away rescources from the actual working people. In this case the coders, Designers, engineers and so on. Do you belive that this is the actual Problem here?
I think you may have identified a real issue in the scene in regards to scope and time – The issue by the sounds of it is, The Scope side of things is handled by the Devs whereas the Time issue handled by the publisher – And we all know what happens when Art and Corporate interests meet 😉 decent video mate.
This must be the first time, the YouTube alghoritm actually pointed to me a video, that surpassed my expectations by far. A first and I'm really scared over it.
I can't believe how spot on this video is.
They GOT GRANTS for their GAME
pretty sure that the devs only started working on this version of the game a few years ago right around the time that they hired Keanu and they changed the whole game and story to accommodate him and the story is exclusively about him and the whole game suffered its sad i was so excited for this game and it was a hollow shell of what was promised
Funny how as more “progressive” the field gets, the more garbage the quality of the product, and yet they blame a lack of “progressiveness” for the failure. Ironic.
This game should never have been released on last-gen consoles. Should have been full focus on a solid and polished PC release with PS5 and Series X release early next year when people are actually able to get those consoles. PS4 / XBox One development should have been halted 3 years ago.
They learned nothing from Skyrim which was originally released as a PC exclusive and went on to absolutely crush it on console after console after release.
I would imagine the developers were probably thinking the same thing as well. Last-gen consoles will be dead by the middle of next year and Cyberpunk 2077 (in its PS5 / XBone iteration) will be abandonware along with them. This game will never see a stable version on those consoles. Stupid corporate greed and short-sighted profit grabbing has now tarnished what is an absolutely amazing game which could have been a river of cash flow for years to come for CDPR.
The wrong part is Johnny that idee i dont like
Why'd this appear Youtube your algorithm is bonkers, The Background on this video reminds me of those old Psychic adverts that would be on TV at odd hours in the 90s, The Delivery of this content and the background looks like someone proficient in making Myspace homepages Early PowerPoint Displays.
Now to fix it 😃
Or go the no man's sky approach. What design approach is best to solve this problem
Tldr Don't fly too close to the sun
Either time or scope
I like time more
When I pointed out the number of glitches and bad animations in the presentation videos, nobody took me seriously. Well, there you have it now.
I see, they are not writing tests. All mysteries dissolved!
