  1. Arasaka isn't all powerful… they only have the world's second largest nuclear arsenal under their control. The Soviet Union has the largest, yes, the Soviets still exist because it was the '80s and no one could image they'd ever go away.
Definitely play Cyberpunk 2077. It's a fun ride for all the side quests and lore. The main story is mid until you hit Phantom Liberty.

  2. So Shadowrun is my favorite setting for lore (cyberpunk, the genre, meets high fantasy is the very simplified explanation). Cyberpunk (the game/TTRPG series) follows more closely just the genre of Cyberpunk by itself.

Some of the basics of the settings generally involve Techno-orientalism high tech and Asian influence. (A lot of this was born in the 80's when Asia especially Japan was a major driving force in Technological improvements). Another pillar is extra-territorial corporations. (Corporations equal to or greater then world governments in control of anything from individual cities to countries). Technological/capitalistic dystopia. (Again a product of the 80's and a bit earlier a lot of the dystopias found in the medium is usually the corporations / technology's fault) Transhumanism. (Trying to become something more then just human). And is highly influenced by hacker culture… well hacker culture from the early days of the internet.

Also since you liked the Warhammer: Mechanicus game you might like the 3 shadow run games from Harebrained Schemes. If you want the most introduction to the setting then Shadowrun returns is the choice, the best setting is Shadowrun Hong kong, and Shadowrun Dragonfall is just a really good story with improved gameplay over returns, but return is a better introduction to the genre. Honestly all 3 are well worth it to fans of the modern Xcom/Mechanicus strategy genre and each are usually under $20 and often go on sale. They were also made before Paradox ruined the studio.

  3. 9:21 Oh trust me, it’s more than a parallel. In one of the comments of the video, one person even stated that most of the terms described in the list of things the Arasaka algorithm uses to predict and drive purchases, we’re taken from the IRL list the FACEBOOK/META algorithm uses…TO THIS DAY.

Considering how pervasive and anti privacy social media is, you can bet multiple companies have that same list, with a few added terms for good measure. And just like Arasaka, we can’t live much without at least using a few of those corpo services…unless you go into the wilderness and live off the land, which has essentially become my life’s goal now
