Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City is a place I have a morbid fascination with. It is a game world with such a distinct culture, nihilistic outlook on life, and such a prevalence of suffering that make it so interesting. Also, cigarettes!

*Self Harm – Only a discussion of the concept and the mental process/philosophy of self-harm, especially emotional self harm. Only mentioned in the last chapter of the video.

*I am not endorsing drug use of any kind through any language or imagery featured in this video. Any depictions of such are aesthetic in purpose.

*These are fake cigarettes

  1. While cp2077 is my favourite game I can honestly say that even though Night City is beautiful as far as scabs (cities) go it's still ugly. I guess I'm a nomad at heart because I could happily go through life never having to visit any scabs, even though the world outside of the concrete and steel jungles is missing the nature that I feel is very important to life, not just for animals but for healing the human "soul." Without nature we are missing an important element of our existence, one that is slowly vanishing in our real lives.

  2. You know, there is another side to this coin.
Looking at the lore of Cyberpunk, outside night city, it has a sense of hope that few media has.
Night City is the worst city in what used to be California, the worst state in what used to be the US, the worst country in the world to live in.
I dove into the lore of the game since it came out because of this allure, and the truth is, I am not from the US, and ironically, the lore for my home country is actually better than reality in that setting.

But thats neither here nor there. The point is, Cyberpunk asks you what it means to be alive. We will all die eventually. Every day may be our last. It aint as likely as it is in night city, but its still true. Isn't it worth it to risk meeting your grave a little sooner, if it means living more? Of course the game both CP77 and the Tabletop put this in the highest extreme, live a quiet life as a nobody, or die in a blaze of glory.
But it also focuses on some other things. The romances, the good you can do, the bad you can do. The question of what life means to you. The question of who you want to spend the precious time you got with.

And this has such a profound sense of hope, that its difficult to find anything simmilar anywhere. No matter how bad things get, how cruel the world is, these small things, people, moments of peace and quiet. They exist even in the worst place.

But even more so, it points out the flaws and selfishness of those that think they know hope in a superficial sense.
The corpos live to run after a sense of hope in financial security, luxury, and work, but that doesnt protect them from cruelty in their jobs, and the very real threat of crossing the wrong person and finding themself 6 feet under quickly. They aren't beyond this.
The gangers live to run after a sense of hope in tribal comradery. Putting their lives on the line for a group that ultimately only exists for the benefit of the top dogs who still dont live long.
Groups that accept its members sadism and cruelty as long as they make ends meet.
The edgerunners live to run after a sense of hope in achieving their own goals, of being on top, being a legend.
Whatever that means to the individual. Maybe it means getting rich, maybe it means changing peoples minds, maybe it means settling a vendetta. No matter what though, its not achievable because its a vague dream, and eventually any such dream will catch up with you. Be it a bullet to the head, or Cyberpsychosis.

The point being, that any grand idea of "hope" will inevitably drive you insane, make you lose sense of what you really need to be happy.
And there is one ending to Cyberpunk 2077, that lets you leave the city. But that also asks you to let go of what you already lost to the city, and what you may think you owe to it.
But in the end, at least in my opinion, its the best ending you can have, the one ending where you are let go, knowing you will likely die soon, but with the hope that you wont. But much more importantly with friends and found family around you, that give you hope no matter how grim the outlook may be otherwise.
And no matter what, you know that you have the rest of your life with those people, no matter if its a few weeks, a few months, years, or decades. And really, when it comes down to it, thats all anyone can really ask for.
We'll all die one day, and we get to chose what we do with the time we got.

That said, I need a smoke.
