In today’s video, we embark on the two-part special surrounding Dex DeShawn. Arguably one of the greatest buffoons in Night City, Dexter unintentionally helps to skyrocket V to the heights of Night City. But Dex is much more than just a plot device. Dex’s background is an interesting web of secrets, as well as a victim of the bulk of cut content that otherwise would’ve made it into Cyberpunk 2077.

Here, we cover Dex’s infamous and mysterious Pacifica job, and how, instead of learning from this mistake, he doubled down, and ensured his own doom.

Thank you for watching! Have a great day, guys. 😀

  1. Pls READ LOL! Hey so I don’t know what’s up with the audio cutting out at 10:30? That’s weird? I had a lot more to say right there? 😂 ughhhh. I blame my ancient Mac and premiere, it was there when I checked it before exporting. Sorry guys I was talking about how I was trying to come up with a theory for Dex’s Pacifica gig but then I realized there’s just too many blank spots to really do that, segueing to what I think is cut content. Still gets the message across as is, but… AGH 🤣 I don’t want to take the video down because the comments are great. So. I’ll keep an eye out for that in the future.

Also. Note! When I say Dex made the combat zone what we know it as today, I mean he worsened the already existing combat zone. I feel like the way I said it makes it read like he’s the reason Pacifica is screw up which is… unfortunately not true 😂 that’s a whole other iceberg! Should’ve been more clear. Sorry guys!

If you enjoyed this analysis, you might like my post-apocalyptic novel, Caesaria: Book I! It takes place in Canada in a flooded world with various new cultures, following a multiple POV structure. I’ll link it below.

  2. Dex did not create the combat zone. He screwed up a gig spectaculary and had to leave NC, but other than that we don't know much. The Combat existed at least around 2045 during the age of Cyberpunk: Red. Later Corpos tried to turn this area of NC around with massive investments. But aside from gang resistance a massive Militech/NUSA invasion foiled these plans. The half completed buildings of this failed endeavor litter Pacifica. When the war ended a ground commander of NUSA with most of his forces went rogue and instead of leaving he held on to the combat zone around 2070. Renamed his area Dogtown and established himself as an international arms dealer with a district fully independant from NC.

  3. With you talking about what is and is not cannon now due to the changes, it's also worth noting that V's age got changed at some point from 27 down to 23/24. Overall it's a meaningless change since it's never mentioned in game, but it show even when they got the game working right there was still random stuff they're not happy with.

  4. Dexter Despawned. A fitting end for someone so cowardly. Rather than doing what V recommended which is sell the chip and gtfo of town he thought it was smart to kill the only witness to murder of a company known for wanting information before execution by any means. imagine in an alternate timeline he actually used his damned head and listened to reason.

  5. No fucking wonder he ran away from the city some years ago like a pussy after messing up the Pacifica job. A real fixer must be also a good and fair leader, not just been a egomaniac greedy edgelord.

Only a idiot like him would try the Kompeki plaza heist, a real competent fixer would straight up refuse it for how goofy as fuck it is.

  6. Hi. Indeed Dex was a buffon but also was a real coward/traitor, liar mtfkr, excuse me for my words but I am more than honest. I hate him and his lapdog together with Evelyn from first moments i play'd this game…why? Cause like i already told u, they never was honest with us, i mean with V, with Jackie and Evelyn with Judy, she lied her, she dont mention Judy about Konpeki Plaza and about her meeting with that other ugly dumb ..e Bridgette, i hate VDB

  7. And other things, what a shame and lost that moment from old trailers when V can kill himself Oleg and Dex in No-Motell room is not possible in the game, seriously, is not fair, is not fair we are not able to kill them or to kill Adam Smasher during the Heist

  8. I can only tell that I didn't like Dex from the first second. He had that touch of an idiot who tries to be someone he will never be. Sadly Takemura did what I wanted to be doing. And he was way too kind to just shoot the mf in the face like that. He should have been donated to the Scavs after I was done with him😂

  9. I'm really enjoying your vidyas! You seem to have a lot if passion about Cyberpunk 2077 and the other media you cover as well as story telling overall. As a writer, I can appreciate such genuine passion. Keep up the great work! Also, love the use of Tim Curry's SPACE! Meme, lol.

PS: Easy Pete is a great one too. Mr House analysis, maybe?

  10. I always figured Dex was always planning to throw V and Jackie under the bus as easy scapgoats. He's picked mercs who are competent but out of their depth. I think rather than a come back he just wants to have a massive score and then leg it.

I think T Bug might even be in on it. She doesn't want ties, and she says a couple of suspicious things on the lead up to the heist.

  11. oooh…T-Bug and Rhino worked for Dex? the Pacifica mess….

you know, there is a theory in the steam disscusions pages, that T-Bug was working for the Voodoo's while working for Dex during the heist. that they were the ones that scorched her, not Netwatch or Arasakak that night.

but what you said (and this is my second attempt to write it, since my damn tablet's funky touch system frelled the last lot up and lost it) just made me think.
i started originally writing when you mentioned the interview with Rhino, because i realised something.

so, the original screw up in Pacifica happened 2 years before the game.
two years….two years before the Secure your Soul program was launched. THAT'S the key.

now, that theory about Bug talks about messages. that the voodoo's were the ones that contacted Yorinobu, pretending to be NetWatch.
in the GIM cinema, on Mosley's laptop there are some messages. one is a poem in Creole. the other is messages between Evelyn Parker and NetWatch.
she is telling them 'i know what you want, and i can get it for you. dont mess me about, this isnt a standard deal'
and they are denying that they even know what she is talking about.

however, there are also messages between Yorinobu and NetWatch (i have not seen them myself, but they may be in his laptop in the North Oak residence)
they specificaly ask for the engram of Johnny Silverhand to be on the relic. No Silverhand, no deal.
so, the theory goes that it's actualy the voodoo boys, posing as NetWatch, who contacted Yorinobu.
offered him something he would want, that only NetWatch could provide, in exchange for a Relic chip, containing the Engram of Johnny SIlverhand.
Yori would be ok with this, since he agrees with Silverhand's ideals, to destroy 'Saka. Getting him out of Mikoshi would be good, he might think. Tho he wouldnt know what they were going to use him for.

stealing the Reliquary (thats what i call his fathers special version, to seperate it from the standard ones) and giving THAT version to NetWatch would be in Yori's best interests too, since the moment he learned it was designed from the start, to copy the client engram, over the mind of the host body, he will have realised his father always meant to use HIM as the next body.
(he knows his father is dissapointed in him. Kei, his big brother, was originaly to be the heir. but he self deleted via Soulkiller after the AHQ bomb. So Yori was next in line. he also knows his father's style and that he won't give up rulling the Corp so easily. Longevity can only do so much, so if tech arrives that will let him get a whole new younger body, he would take it)

so. back to the Pacifica screw up.
two years before the Secure your Soul program.
think about it. the timing is perfect. Someone (i'm betting on that dude that is on the tv, telling you which shares to buy lol) had an insider in Arasaka. this insder probably got found out.
ran to Pacifica, thinking 'Saka wouldn't find them there. Bad idea, Choom. as Hanako says, 'if Arasaka wants to find something, they WILL find it'
so, the gonk got himself spotted, ran to Pacifica to hide out.
normally, Saka uses Tygers. but there is zero Tyger Claw presence in Pacifica. so…who would they call?
you don't ask the voodoos for anything. you certainly do not ask them, or even PAY them, to collect 'sensitive data'. you need someone smart enough to do the job, but dumb enough not to double cross you. (*waves at Anna Puma and Uni Puma* lol) or snoop at the data.
    Heloooo Animals.

they already have a slight presence in Pacifica (or maybe that is when they first started running about there?) they are big and strong, and most chooms won't cross them from fear of being twisted into a spiral shape and then hung on some wall like an ornament.
they are also only going to be interested in payment, can rough up the target, make it look like normal gang violence. trash the area (they are very good at that, we know this from the Red Queen club lol) and are unlikely to be interested in anything intellectual (yeah, its a stereo type. but their coctail of meds makes them rage and be dumber, if you read some of the side effects from it in a shard in Little China, the three Animals with the bikes in that corner that are an NCPD point)

So, Saka sends in the Animals to take out the insider. they do the job, but as usual, they don't look for hidden safe storage (if it was physical, they would break it open hoping for meds i bet. but it's going to be hidden and data storage.)
Mr Stocks (i duno his name lol) from the TV finds out his insider is flatlined in Pacifica. 'Drat. how am I gona make money off insider trading now?' lol
so, he hires Dex to go in, get the data and get back out.
Dex hires T-Bug, maybe he knows her from her youth? maybe they already worked together? duno. and he hires Rhino as muscle. they go in, and things go bad.
Dex delta's outa there faster than you can say 'kibble' leaving Rhino to deal with the Animals and Bug alone, in Pacifica.
Rhino gets an in with the gang (she said, she beat up their gangoons, which means she's already tough enough to be one. better a living gangoon than a dead merc?)
but Bug..she gets caught by the voodoos. they pobably tell her 'give us de data, and we wont hurt you.'
they probably recognise her as a good runner, and if she is already Pacifca born, she wont be a 'ranyon' to them.

they find out that in a couple years time, Arasaka is going to drop some new tech that is going to set the world on fire. every mover, shaker and poser with edds to burn is going to want this thing.
it's some sort of device that will let you keep a copy of your loved ones. yeah, you heard that right. Insider does not know how, but that's all they could find out'
this is something Brigitte finds interesting. they let Bug live, on the understanding that she will not mention this to anyone. 'you did not get de data. understand?'

fast forward to 2077. Secure your Soul adverts go up all over the city. it's obvious to them now, what the 'new tech' they learned about was. this is the device.
Brigitte forms a plan. Yorinobu was known to be a rebel, (his coat says as much if you grab it from the case in the bathroom lol) that he wanted to stop his father when he was younger.
So, they contact him, posing as NetWatch, offering him something only NetWatch can offer (not sure what) and offer a trade.
a Relic, with a specific Engram on it. that of Johnny Silverhand. He agrees (but does not mention he is going to take the Reliquary instead of a standard Relic)
this was just to get him to bring the Relic to NC. they have no intention of paying him whatever it was 'NetWatch' offered him.
they then hire Evelyn, who is known to be a Doll who he has 'visits' with. (let's face it. if the VDB's want info, they will find it if its stored digitally. they ran a search and found her name cropping up visiting him, i bet)
they hired her to make the BD of his room, planning to do exactly what we did. use the recording to find the container that he was hiding the Relic in.
they likely had no intention of letting her live afterwards (tho she may not have known this) and they planned to steal the Relic, same as us, same as Evelyn.

she was smart enough to plan the exact same heist. (im sure the VDB's would do something slightly slicker. maybe slip in as 'houskeeping' and klep it that way. not be quite so visible as two arms dealers with a flathead, a flathead from a recently hyjacked MiliTech convoy to boot. one runner to hit the Dweller, the other to hack the case. or maybe even just one runner who can trigger the blackout in the penthouse, then go up and grab it.)
but Dex was the only Fixer dumb enough to bite. as you said, Rogue smelled it out before even knowing how deep it went. (probably wont klep from Arasaka without the poking of a raging Rockerboy lmao) Mr Hands made comment about the shoddy identitys Dex got for us when we worked with him in Dogtown.
and even the Padre does not have much nice to say about him. Vik says he isnt quite the 'mr Cool' he pretends to be.

whew. that's a LOT of text lmao.
everyone, make a saving roll versus Text to Eye Crit damage!

  12. I'll admit, it is hard to dislike Dex. He's got charisma. The first time I played, I got played, and didn't even really realize it. I thought he was a pretty cool character. Having played through a few times, I get more of what was going on. I know Vik had some things to say about Dex, but you'd think he would've clued V in on everything he knew. Might not have swayed V because of how tight they were with Jackie, but still. It would've gone a long way toward feeling trepidation as the day of the heist came about.

Maybe I'm dumb and a bit naive, but I felt a little blindsided. And maybe that's how you were supposed to feel. It isn't wrong how it came across, but I would've felt a bit more anxious knowing how many people had severe doubts about Dex, or even given V more info about why he left Night City. Maybe I just didn't pick up on it like I was supposed to. Who knows. Its still an awesome story. My only wish is that the Devs had been able to make all of CP 2077 like they did with Phantom Liberty. I absolutely loved that DLC. It had been a very long time since a game made the experience so visceral that I kept dying rather than give up Songbird to Reed (not knowing that I could put her down and stop him later.) I was absolutely livid to the point I wanted to quit the game entirely rather than let Reed have her. THAT is an amazing story.

  13. I think you have a good point. I’ve seen other people theorizing that the montage of you and Jackie was originally supposed to be playable content but they didn’t have time to work on it.

  14. You learn about what happened with Pacifica and why it is what it is in the lore books. NCPD (and the mafia who controlled NC) were spread too thin and could not control the crime there, thus the mayor declared it a "combat zone." This was long before the group that became 2077's Voodoo Boys existed; long before they arrived from Haiti.

At some point later (I think the 2040's??), corps saw the potential in the district and tried to expand into it, constructing the skyscrapers and infrastructure we see in PL. This failed; the corps pulled out and Pacifca returned to being a lawless region.

When the NUSA declared war on NC in the 2070's, they took advantage of Pacifca being loosely controlled (NC has little to no juristiction or desire to go there). The region that would become Dogtown was left under Hansen's control.

  15. I'm suspicious about the choice of telling Dex about Evelyn

As it stands, whether or not you tell dex about Evelyn changes nothing. He carries on with konpecki as planned. Not even much additional dialogue. In a game built by choices…. In act 1…. Something doesn't seem right

I suspect bug was originally intended to work more closely, or even in personal opposition, with the voodoo boys. The key to the voodoo boys goals was Johnny's engram. The heist absolutely has to happen, and the chip has to leave in one piece with the mercs. I think CDPR intended for the heist to change drastically for telling Dex about Evelyn, prompting T bug to make sure it continues one way or the other. There could have even been an unfinished quest to retrieve chip after bug uses the hammerhead to steal it. Possibly to sell it to militech for a fortune so she can finally retire clean possibly with militech contacts. How great would it be if we run into Meredith stout again after her screwing her over, or screwing.. her.. under you get my point. Or an event in which you have to stop bug from destroying it so V can get paid and Jackie can be a legend who looted from arasaka. Bug might know about mikoshi since it's no secret anymore and might suspect that since the VDBs want it so bad, that it certainly involves the black wall and needs to be destroyed for humanities safety, fearing the black wall from her history as a runner.

Konpecki is a huge quest, and would have been a perfect opportunity to showcase how important each and every choice you make is, and how night city can make even innocent seeming characters cut throat, or to illuminate how the weight of the city forces everyone into a corner. But to make a whole new event string for it including animated scenes and more dialogue maybe new items, for a character not present in the whole game…. Makes sense why they just kill her off abruptly and we never hear back.

If I had to choose between making sure the cynosure was as scary as it possibly could be, or a more dynamic first act, I'd probably opt for the polish on phantom liberty and it's new gear

  16. Coast View is populated by the VDBs, Scavs and Animals. I wonder if Dex’ actions split the VDBs into the two factions. The ones in Dogtown and the other in Coast View.

The VDBs in Dogtown was very aware of the Blackwall and saw it as a mistake to mess with it. Momon Brigitte on the other hand seemed to have false hopes to gain access to the other side, never realizing the danger.

T-Bug never pierced the Black Wall, so her being affiliated with the VDBs in Coast View seems plausible, making her acquaintance with the gang in Dogtown very unlikely.

By piecing this information together you gain a view of who’s who, and where their operations originated.

I doubt T-Bug would have wasted so much time if she’d been affiliated with the Dogtown’s VDB’s. The fact it took hours after she gained access after neutralizing the netrunner at Konpeki Plaza says a lot. So Dex’ modus operandi of using the cheapest and most expendable seems to be confirmed. He probably sweet-talked T-Bug, and like Jackie and V, fell for it.

  17. The cutscene where T-Bug betrays V really seems like it was supposed to be the canon plot. While video game developers have been known to model swap characters to ruin spoilers, tbe fact that V's cyberware malfunctions because of a quickhack really makes me believe T-Bug was meant to attack v, not some random assistant

  18. Dexter DeShawn was an overhyped wannabe big shot. The way Jackie and Victor talked about him and the way he introduced himself, I thought he truly was a big shark. But after that heist, it became all too apparent that Dex was just a bloated pufferfish. "300 pound black Jesus of the Afterlife" my @$$.

    Nice gun, though.

  19. My Theory?
Dex never was a big shot. He got a smal scale gig and screwed it ROYALY. Nobody knows what it was about because it was insignificant. But due to him F-in up in ways unimaginable, he actualy got a rep boost, because… hey, if you fail THAT hard, it must have ben important, right? …and thus started the legend of Dex, the Top-Fixer who could not fix water out of a boot, even if the instructions are written on the sole.

  20. "Dex" was a fraud from the beginning….yeah he put "V" & "Jackie" on to what was supposed been a wealthy fixer gig that should made them, himself, & the Militech chick "T-Bug" rich. Intead it became a shyt storm of tragic lost, damage chip cause the core game narrative for "V's" race against time before her unalive, & be on the radar of "Arasaka"….."Dex" wanted the credit for being a respected fixer but he isn't out in the field making that happen….So for me ….he's not who he trying to appear……
