Nvidia unveiled the RTX 50-series range of GPUs at CES 2025, but we had the chance to take a quick look at DLSS 4 running on an RTX 5080 over the preceding holiday break. Here’s a look at DLSS 4 super resolution and ray reconstruction improvements stacked up against the existing technology, plus a look at the new Frame-Gen 3x and 4x options and some frame-rate, consistency and latency comparisons.

A few notes: Super resolution and ray reconstruction comparisons taken with frame generation disabled and with CP2077 post-process features (chromatic aberration, film grain, motion blur etc) disabled on RT Overdrive mode. All b-roll uses frame-gen 3x, RT Overdrive mode but again with post-process features disabled for improved clarity. Frame-rate clips captured on RT Overdrive but with film grain disabled for better image quality on YouTube.

  1. I'm happy for the new upscaling, DLSS2 was already really good at that regard, now it became even better. Being backwards compatible is also really good news. However I couldn't care less about frame generation, even 2X FG put so much input lag in CP2077 playing normally at around ~50 fps that I don't think it has any real use under like 90-120 real fps. It was way better playing at slightly choppy 50 fps than the smooth but laggy 100. So it won't save the middle range user, 4xFG won't magically make his 30 fps game buttery smooth 120 fps. I mean it will, but with an unbearable lag. While the quality of the upscaling can really be judged on video or stills, frame generation does not translate well to youtube. You only see the smooth movement, but don't fell the added latency.

  2. Well done! The visual quality uplift you've shown is substantial. I look forward to your in-depth review when the drivers release. Now I have an excuse to re-benchmark my system.

  3. owning a 4090 and i wonder if it makes sense to Upgrade to a 5080.. I wont pay the 2,5k Euro for a 5090 since i dont okay above 120 fps Anyway.. my 4090 sucks at my games i play.. i play arma reforger, helldivers 2 and the 4090 barely gets over 80 fps at 4 k.. the gpu only shines with Fg😂.. waste of money, will never buy a 90 anymore..

  4. All the issues so far from just the first minute.

    0:12 Bottom left scrolling text

0:16 Center shadow cast on smoke

0:33 Bottom left smoke above fryer

0:38 Right center Shimmering near cups on table

    0:55 Left headlights distortion

Never really been impressed by dlss or any ai upscaler for motion. It creates more issues than it fixes. Yes, it has a more detailed image but for scenes that are slow or still. In motion, it is distracting.

  5. All the controversy aside… I just upgraded my CPU to the 9800x3D but I am still using my 3090… should I spring for the 5090?? I feel left behind being stuck with only DLSS2. Although 4 is coming to the 3000 series I think I read? Just not the Frame Generation. Or do you think I should wait one more generation for the 6090?

  6. Also worth considering are Nvidia's statements to the effect that various elements of DLSS have been streamlined, utilizing less resources… I imagine this is the 'DLSS-Light' you seem to have previously considered would be beneficial to the Switch 2's implementation of any DLSS 🤔 This can only be positive.

  7. Why is there no mention of these weird shadow glitches that are seen in many scenes? The tree at 0:11 and 2:142:18 really bad here, also the leaves at 0:22 and 0:300:38 the roofs of the market stands weird shadows popping in and out of existence. I would rather play with no path or normal ray tracing if this looks that bad. Total immersion killer for me
