The somewhat unlikely scenario of DF Direct Weekly making its way to a 49th instalment has somehow come to pass! Tom, Alex, Will and Audi are all consigned to Rich’s basement this week, meaning that it’s just John and Rich to tackle the big news of the week: Cyberpunk 2077’s 1.5 update with next-gen features landing, Dying Light 2 receiving VRR unlocked frame-rate support on Xbox Series X and – yes – there’s reaction to the reaction to Horizon Forbidden West’s release.

  1. I have a Series S which I use as a Game Pass machine in the lounge. I have my decent gaming PC upstairs. To be honest, I’m actually quite impressed with the little fella. For what it costs I think it’s a very decent little console. I certainly don’t regret buying it, and I know a few people that’ve done the same thing – buy a Series S for Game Pass in the lounge. I’m sure MS were anticipating just that, meaning more Game Pass Ultimate subs. Pretty clever on their part I think.

  2. Cyberpunk and other games on this gen suffer from stupid consumer decisions people make.

People want to have cheap console that will run games the same way expensive PCs do but covid proved that most of them can pay much more if there is no other option.

That’s stupid how people change often their phones which are much more expensive than consoles and they see nothing wrong with that.

  3. John could you please move your cam down just a little so your eyes are not right on your glasses eye frame, and you must have some money to buy glasses that fit or maybe look into laser eye surgery? or contact lenses?, high quality content video as always👍

  5. I'm very happy with my 6900xt. I think like most gamers, RT is getting more popular but the hit to performance without DLSS is so big in some games that it's not worth it. Especially competitive games. My friend with a 3080 wouldn't play cyberpunk with RT on because of this and he said it was glitchy. Still feel like RT especially combined with 4k is such a hit. Only DLSS makes it possible.

  6. Any chance of testing Cyberpunk 2077 using GeForce Now on an Nvidia Shield? Supports 4K/60 with all settings maxed out after the 3080 update. I just got gig internet and it seems pretty legit. An Nvidia Shield with GeForce Now is less than a PS5 or Series X and you can use you Xbox controller.

  7. I'm having a blast playing some of last gen's games on the new consoles where they are consistently holding 60FPS as opposed to unstable 30FPS. I can't wait for NEXT gen, where this gen's games will run perfectly at Quality 4k 60FPS & Performance 1440/60 FPS! Are developers OVER developing these games for current consoles? Seems to be a thing every generation going back the last few. XBox BC showed that with games that ran poorly on the 360 running so much better on the Xbox One and now Xbox One games running nicely on the X/S. How much more biting off more than they can chew?

  8. The problem with Nintendo 3DS/Wii (and Sony with PSP/Vita) pulling the plug on their digital storefronts is that even if you buy a hard copy of a game, like all games these days, they require patches and we run the risk later of not being able to update these games. It really does screw the consumer over.

  9. I know the shimmering is there on Horizon but I honestly don’t see this huge gulf in visuals that people keep mentioning between the two modes. What you lose in some hyper detail you get back with the extra temporal resolution. It plays so well in 60fps and still looks fantastic. I’ve tried 30 for brief stints and the chugginess of the 30fps is such a visually detrimental thing to me that it’s just not worth it for what feels like minor visual upgrades from what I am seeing. And I played the whole of Miles Morales in the 30fps mode, or TLOU2 on PS4 Pro without issue. Here when you have both modes available day one I’m very happy with the 60fps mode

  10. I really don't understand the continued interest in physical media. For one, doesn't matter anymore if you buy it on disc or not, the game is still incomplete and you often times have to download a day one patch of several, if not 50 gigs or more. For the people afraid that these game services will someday byte the dust, by that time there will be emulators to play all these games without the need for those services. It just isn't worth it with games from the past 5 or 10 years to have them on disc. Older games, yeah, I can definitely see that because the whole game is on the disc aside from a few small patches you can store in a folder on your hard drive. I still have original media for games like MOH:AA, and even Trespasser from 1999.

  11. Rich, I moved to 'embracing all digital' some years ago but I greatly respect your stance and commitment to physical media – especially the demand to be able to play a game 'as is' without having to muck around with the internet and patches, etc. It should be a bare minimum that is sadly fading away (I'm looking at you Diablo 2 Resurrected, which refused to allow single player local games without first creating an online account). Cheers!

  12. I’m surprised the horrible shimmering / aliasing problem in Horizon Forbidden West’s performance mode is still largely ignored here. It’s really, really bad, but DF’s like “well, I just play in 30fps then!”

    Mind-boggling.

  13. John thank you for constantly bringing up how Halo infinite doesn't have the actual game on the disc. It was an absolutely hideous move by Microsoft to do this.

  14. Just saying: Guardians of the Galaxy and Elex 2 also have a GTX 1060 as minimum specs. I have always played Piranha Bytes games on PC, but Elex 2 will be the first one i play on console, simply because i can't upgrade my GTX 970 in any way a sane person would call reasonable.

  15. You can enable TruMotion on the LG oleds to make 30 frame videos more fluent, you have to pay attention that you don’t set the values to high to avoid the soap opera effect. That sadly doesn’t work for games, because TruMotion is disabled in gaming mode

  16. For Cyberpunk on PS5, for me the worst problem is that it want to install the PS4 game EACH TIME I put in the disc. That’s really annoying.
And I’m a bit disappointed by textures. Some textures are reaaaaally blurry. Kinda sad because it could be much better on this point. Same for draw distance.
But for most of things it’s quite great. For RT it’s sad but considering they struggled to optimize it on consoles I can accept to not have that much RT. Even if I would have preferred a bit of rt reflections.
Also the HDR finally works in CP2077 on Ps5 ! That brings a huge improvement too ! (On PS4 hdr was awful on Cyberpunk 2077, really awful and washed out whatever the settings)

  17. I find myself with the same conundrum as John. As an owner of a PC, a PS5 and a Switch it's hard to know what platform to go for when it comes to multiplatform games. I usually stick to exclusives when it comes to consoles but some third-party games really work well with the Switch's portability. My main principle is still to game on PC, for keeping most of my games on one platform and not having to worry about backwards compatibility. But, conversely, i still have a better experience on console, just because of how convenient and hassle-free they are, as well as providing physical media, which i totally prefer. It's a tough choice.

  18. Not that many TVs have VRR. Even new ones. I think people don’t realise how niche that is for TVs. Most people don’t buy the expensive models with all the features. I got an LG A1 OLED 48 inch for the game room a few months ago and it doesn’t have any 120fps or VRR. And a TV is not something you buy that often. I still use my 2008 1080p LCD in the living room. I could have gotten the Nano 91 or whatever it was called and gotten that but I choose to go with OLED. And the A1 for €500 less than the C1. I do have VRR on my PC monitors though since there the prices have gone down.

  19. Honestly I had more fun playing Ark : survival evolved at 480p on an Xbox one, then I had with Cyberpunk on my gaming PC. I appreciate a well polished game with beautiful lighting and what not, but at the end of the day, Cyberpunk just has horrible game design. My issues were never the visuals or bugs, its always just been an extra complaint to throw in there because the deceptive marketing about the actual gameplay left me with disdain for the game in general.
