  1. +/ Night City Stories +/ Chapter 66 – Take it From the Top

A heavy knock is heard abruptly at the door to the hideout causing everyone to react in various ways. Several of them reach for their iron as Brian puts his hand out to quickly calm everyone. He then approaches and cautiously slides the door open revealing Carter’s tall, lanky frame, slightly taller than Brian, standing there with a smirk on his face. Now cleaned up, his short white hair with a deep widow’s peak compliments his gear. A black leather trench coat with a high collar and a plain white T-Shirt underneath… complete with a pair of black jeans and boots. Brian ushers him in; As he steps past him, Carter speaks.

“jesus. Wasn’t easy findin’ this place. This’s the kind of hole I’d expect to find Bartmoss himself tucked away in.”

“And how did you find it exactly.” Brian asks in a flat tone with skepticism on his tongue.

“Well, I was wanderin’ around for a while with the deetes you gave me and still had no luck. Then I saw her.” He says gesturing at BugBear causing her to look over. “Recognized her so I just followed. Figured it’d be best if we weren’t seen comin’ back here together.” Carter concludes as he continues to glance around the hideout taking it all in. Brian glances at BugBear with a look of blame. She quickly looks away slightly embarrassed.

“Nice place.” He says as he slowly walks about checking out the digs. "Considering the neighborhood, i'd say this is pretty first class." He then begins to approach each member of the crew posted in different areas of the hideout to introduce himself and catch up.

He ends his introductions with BugBear. As he turns his attention towards her, he raises his eyebrows in interest and attraction while he checks her out in her Night City street gear and yellow riding jacket. He approaches her and offers his hand for a shake speaking in his patented sly, fast talking monotone.

“Blix. Carter Blix. At your service doll. Don’t think we got a chance to formally meet.” Carter says with a playboy smirk on his face.

“BugBear, nice to meet you.” She responds with a friendly smile while shaking his hand.

“BugBear!” He says with a heightened tone. “A Netrunner handle huh. I can dig it.” He says as they both giggle at the same time. This grabs Netty’s attention as he watches and listens on growing agitated. Brian picks up on this.

Carter continues after glancing at her wrists. “Preem chrome.” He says releasing her hand from the shake causing her to look down at the glowing pink Monowire in her forearm. “That dyna? Can tell by the thickness… they don’t fuck around. Heard they slice like butter. Heh… Pink model even. Style AND lethality… I like it.” He concludes while nodding and continuing to smile at her.

“I see you know your chrome.” BugBear says while smiling back.

“Hey, sometimes it pays to.” He says raising his eyebrows while still smiling. He steps away back toward Brian.

“Thanks for comin'.” Brian says as Carter approaches him and shakes his hand.

“My pleasure. No chance I’d miss an opportunity like this.”

"Right. Lets get started." Brian says as him and carter turn to face the waiting crew.

Some time has passed as the sun outside begins to set. As Carter continues to explain the situation, Brian offers him a smoke. "No thanks, I quit." Carter says as he continues.

"Good news is, The location's isolated. Away from prying eyes. Bad news is its kinda a fuckin' fortress. They were holdin’ me there for a while.. saw em breakin' people's resolve… crushin' their spirits…Rippin’ people’s chrome… straight from the hip too… no blockers, no anesthetic. Real fuckin' mind games." Carter reluctantly pauses as several traumatic memories flash by in his head. He shakes his head lightly at the thoughts. "..Anyway, these rats have gotta heard by now what went down at the Pistis Sophia. They'll be on high alert." He concludes as various members of the crew begin to chime in.

"How many." Brian asks while puffing his cig.

"Hard to say. We definitely took a chunk out of em back at the hotel but you can tell they've been doin’ this shit for some time now. There's gotta be a structure in place. A lot of people involved."

"Any runners." Netty asks before taking another drag of his smoke.

"I'd imagine so. They ain't rippin' all that chrome without at least some soft work."

"You sure what we're owed is even gonna be there? The Kiroshi Oracles? The eds we’re owed..?" Audrey asks with skepticism.

"They had shipments being dropped off regularly. They put me in a holdin' cell that gave me a view of their loadin’ dock. I'd see crates and duffle bags with scores they were talkin' about rollin' in pretty often. Whatever they've got. All the eggs are in one basket."

"What about signs of corpos." Zaunya asks finishing her smoke and putting her black leather facemask back on.

"Corpos..? Heh.. honey. These are scavs. They're more likely to rip a corpo before workin' with em."

"Why." Brian asks vaguely; tripping Carter up in the moment as he searches for an answer.

"uhhm.. Corpos and scavs mix together like-"

"No… I'm asking you why. Why are you doin' this. Why are you here right now."

"Why..?" Carter asks confused. Brian doesn't respond, instead looking him in eyes, waiting for an answer. The abrupt shift in tone raises everyone’s attention.

Carter hesitates while thinking deeply to himself. Extremely reluctant to answer the question. He hears the voice of the woman he was thinking about on the rooftop. She giggles playfully as a quick flash of her smiling face looking at him enters his mind. Brian picks up on his silent reaction.. recognizing it as genuine, he takes another drag of his smoke.

“They uh… they iced my crew so..” Carter says reluctantly with a somber pinch of his lips.

Brian immediately thinks back to the merc at the Pistis Sophia that Carter executed. Due to brutality of the moment. The memory rings clear in his head as he hears the voice of the merc and his final words to Carter.

“You-…you think we.. you think we were just gonna let her go? You stupid… STUPID FUCKIN' GONK! Hahahaha”

"Yeah.. that's right motherfucker. We took her… stripped her parts.. had some pretty decent chrome on her to be honest. But not before we each had a taste of her sweet, delicious-"

Brian silently remembers this moment and keeps it to himself.

“On a vengeance kick huh? Slippery slope choom.” Audrey says.

“If by vengeance kick you mean hittin’ a scav cache built up over the course of god knows how long… and I guess wastin’ a few gonks who deserve It along the way then sure.” Carter replies trying to avoid talking about his personal hurts and motivations. Brian takes over.

“I’m not expectin’ em to be sportin’ too much cyberware… scavs aren’t really like Maelstrom.. They’re more in the business of dealin’ chrome rather than chippin’ it.”

“That’s a good point.. didn’t really think of that.” BugBear says.

“Alright, this is what we’re gonna do…” Brian says as everyone listens up.
