Credit to CDPR for not holding back on the Raster settings. Cyberpunk 2077 looks awesome at its core.
Path Tracing is way too over rated. Huge impact on performance with very small difference in visuals.
Which is which
"Does this make it any better?"
"Nah, just different"
Pathtracing In a nutshell
That exactly my problem with Path tracing in this game, the Lightning/Shadows/Reflections look stunning with it but unfortunately the picture quality is destroyed by the denoising + awfull ghosting then you need to upscale from lower resolutions to make it run so it make thing even worse
So even with a 4090 i use only RT Psycho with DLSS Balanced or Raster with DLSS Quality and the picture quality is way better
I think PT is mostly for people like me. I can see the differences and for me the differences are worth it. It's less about the "always" and more about the "in the right moment".
Most times especially in cut scenes you will barely find a difference because they are already hyper optimized and in the worst case with a few exceptions present just a different image.
But for someone like me when those exceptions hit they are immense and I love seeing the 10s that look 10x better.
Also PT almost completely removes any left over visual bugs. If you are someone who walks a lot in games you will see forgotten shadows all over the place. PT removes that problem.
PT in my optionion is only worth it if you are hyper focussed on the details. People that use DLDSR and or HDR and or 4k/8k panels.
All those technologies are made for a small minority.
The noise, performance and awful handling of transparencies (10:20) in PT makes it hard to justify using it on current hardware. Probably be after 3 GPU generations before we can actually push enough pixels to compensate for the denoiser.
On the right much better in visuals and perfomance
The game looks great without Ray Tracing/Path Tracing. But those SSR glitches kills me and the cube map reflections are very low resolution on those curved glass surfaces and with RT reflections ON is the difference nigh and day. I played through twice the game with PT and I see the differences. For me PT transforms the game to a level where it worth to use but at least RT reflections should turn on because those SSR reflections just looks horrible especially on the water surfaces. This presentation doesn't show the full truth about PT vs. resterization in my opinion.
Too big of a FPS hit imo. At 1080p I would rather have higher FPS and lighter forms of ray tracing.
The difference exists but right now its not worth it. I think it will be worth it to consider Path Tracing when the RTX 70 series or RX 10000 series comes out.
