CD Projekt Red released yet another update with some pretty massive changes! Can normal ray tracing hold up to path tracing now? Let’s find out!
Cyberpunk has had a big makeover since the beginning of the year. To think that they didn’t even have path tracing when I did my first comparison almost a year ago. Now #cyberpunk2077 is one of the best looking games out there and has one of the best lighting systems I’ve ever seen. With this newest update they added ray reconstruction to standard #raytracing, meaning you no longer need to use full path tracing to get the benefits, like much sharper reflections. It’s going to be wild going forward to see where this technology brings us, I can’t wait to see it in new environments like the Witcher.
Path tracing with ray reconstruction is absolutely playable now with DLSS frame generation turned on, albeit with an expensive GPU. It’s stunning to see the world in action with only a small loss in quality. When you watch the video imagine how light actually works, think of shadows that would be cast, think of the direction of light… That’s what ray tracing does!
Settings at the end of the video. Ray reconstruction was enabled on all clips.

Interesting in 4:47 the space inbetween the boxes still catches quite a bit more light without RT.
Was there a roof above her or all open street, would love to see how the light falls when the sun stands higher in the sky with RT.
Great comparison!
The best ray tracing/path tracing and graphics comparison channel on YouTube. Period.
Useful
you showed you're using gamma correction. how come you're not using HDR?
A comparison video that actually knows where to look, excellent vid!
1:06 Damn that is some serious ghosting from the cars in the distance.
RT does look nice when it works, but until all the artifacts are resolved (and without cutting framerate in half) I still can't justify using it for gameplay.
Awesome comparison, must be a nightmare to make!
