Do you remember the disappointing first release of Cyberpunk 2077?

Do you also miss the pain and want to feel it again? Then make you a cup of tea, buy extremely overpriced hardware from a scalper, and see Cyberpunk 2077’s second horrible release, but this time in VR. And all because VorpX has released a free VR mod for cyberpunk as a Christmas present. Then let’s get started.

The installation process is very simple. Download the mod from the following page:
https://www.vorpx.com/cyberpunk-vr-download/

As long as you can read, just install them by following the installation process. At the end, the configuration opens automatically to set up your HMD. If you missed it, you can find it in your Cyberpunk folder under “…steamappscommonCyberpunk 2077binx64pluginsvpxCP2077”

How do you play in VR now? First, start Steam and SteamVR. After that you just start Cyberpunk. Ignore the Steam error message that it is not a VR game because it is now. When starting, VorpX shows you the most important information and buttons.

In the game you set your graphics to minimum. Do not ask, do.
Fortunately, your controllers indicate which gamepad controls they are emulating.
And that brings us straight to the problems. Cyberpunk 2077 is not a native VR game and it is not Roomscale. You can play it standing or seated. With the Vive or Index controller you can use the grip buttons to zoom in on the game for almost full VR. You have the complete game in 3D geometry and can move freely. However, this leads to an easy out-of-body experience. Because you control your character via your VR controller. The front is always where you looked at when you started Cyberpunk. If you turn in real life, you quickly lose your orientation where the front is.

It gets worse when you want to use guns. You also aim with the stick on your controller, but you don’t have a crosshair. The only thing that worked on firearms were the smart weapons in which autoaim is a feature and not a cheat.

The vehicle control is okayish in itself. Because V is quite small you have to stand in a half squat position on motorcycles in order not to destroy the immersion.

The main problem with immersion is, as with the release, the performance of the game. I play with a relatively old GTX 1070 and VorpX recommends at least a 1080. But if you can’t afford an up-to-date graphics card with the horrendous prices and scalpers everywhere, you’re pretty screwed. The game is actually only good in this state with my hardware to stand still and watch the cars glitch around. The frame rate especially suffers when driving. The picture lags differently in each eye, which leads to the fact that in some cases you can no longer see anything.

To remedy this, I tried to achieve more images with the Dynamic FidelityFX CAS resolution scaling. The problem with this is that if the frame rate is too low, it will continuously adjust the resolution. If you move your head quickly, you can see, at least in the HMD, that the first image is rendered with a high resolution and only then with a lower one. The whole thing helps only a little to bring the frame rate into a somewhat playable rate.

During my 30 minutes of recording, Cyberpunk only crashed three times. I call that a win!

To summarize it:
It’s good that I made my tea beforehand, because I suffer from severe motion sickness and that despite my stomach trained in VR for over 2000 hours.
Fortunately, the mod is free. I recommend everyone who has VR, a powerful PC and cyberpunk to try the mod. With a puke bucket nearby.
Simply standing in the world of cyberpunk is great, but unfortunately not really playable even without performance problems.

  1. I always keep in mind with mods, if there is an issue, don't attack the mod author, as it is free and hard work. But i have to vent this somewhere..

-This mod is released, and there is no information on his site about trouble shooting, or acknowledging issues with the mod installation which from my experience are right there out the gate.

    – I couldn't get this to work on openxr
-I have oculus and it didn't work installing it specifically for that (which i tired first)

-For now i uninstall it, and i try to run the game in flat screen and it doesn't run.
-Considering i followed the very basic setup process detailed, i just think 'how can they not be aware of these issues and decide to release the mod as if it works fine, not acknowledging issues'.

I just have this experience so much with mods, and find it hard not to get angry with the mod author, i appreciate the effort, but please test your mod more, and be transparent and provide details if there is issues= this should have had a disclaimer about issues and should have been called a beta test.

the reason it is annoying for me= they seem to have released this to beat the Luke R.E.AL. mod, in order to ensure people go to the vorpx site and consider buying the software, which is fair enough- but only if the cyberpunk vr mod works well and is tested- ironically it makes me feel discouraged from buying the vorpx software.

I won't ever attack a mod author, it's not fair. But it's not fair to release mods without acknowledging very obvious issues, not offering any guide, and on top of that i can't play the game in it's original form right now, until i figure out (entirely without guidance) why it doesn't work.

All that being said, if anyone here has tried the mod, and also uninstalling it- if you think i have overlooked something and am wrong, then please i just want to fix the problem and all would be forgiven. But i am fairly savvy and fix my problems usually, so long as some information is given – but right now it is a black box from my end!

    EDIT:

I have fixed the game's inability to run in flat screen= I looked at file folders and realized something was wrong with cyber engine tweaks- so this applies if you use that mod framework (many do)

I have confirmed it is this vorpx mod causing the issue, as i reinstalled the vr mod after reinstalling engine tweaks, and again the game stops being able to run in flatscreen.

So this mod messes up cyberengine tweaks and the game will not run if you rely on that, to fix it you must reinstall cyberengine tweaks.

That is pretty annoying- and no info about it from mod author of this vr mod.

It's probably why i could not get it to work in vr either.
