Well, this is something I didn’t catch the first time around when I read news about an upcoming Cyberpunk showcase. While I knew that Cyberpunk 2077 was about to show off new content for its 1.6 patch, and a look at Cyberpunk Edgerunners, its Netflix anime about to be released, I didn’t realize there would be a literal crossover between the two. The caption for the upcoming reveal stream on Instagram goes into more detail, and shows that even though Edgerunners is not based on the events of Cyberpunk 2077’s main story, that 2077 will now be getting crossover content based on the show:“We will be chatting with Miles Tost and Patrick Mills about all the new stuff that is about to come to Cyberpunk 2077 with the next update – including new @edgerunners-inspired content & missions, new weapons, and new features!”While I suspected the new update would be timed to coincide with the release of Edgerunners near September 13, I didn’t know that it would include actual Edgerunners content. This may mean missions that utilize characters from the show, as so far, we have not seen any characters shown in the trailers in Cyberpunk 2077 itself as of yet, even though both stories take place within Night City. And as such, that means V will have some sort of role to play in the story, even if she’s not shown in the anime itself. Though perhaps the actual anime will contain more game cameos than we can know about right now. If the anime series is good, it may serve to benefit the game with resurgent interest, which is what I’m sure CDPR is hoping to see. My main problem with all the updates with Cyberpunk 2077 so far has been that absolutely nothing has made me log back into the game for more than a few minutes. The latest time I bought an apartment and looked around it, but that was it. Without new missions or something like a New Game Plus, there’s no real reason to actually play, and I really haven’t in any meaningful capacity since I beat it back in December 2020, other than to mess around with alt characters and in photo mode. This update sounds like it will finally be delivering actual new missions for the first time, however. It’s long been rumored that additional Gigs were planned as free DLC outside the upcoming expansion that will arrive 2023, and may itself be previewed during these showcases in a few days. But we didn’t know any new missions would be related to Cyberpunk Edgerunners directly, which is an interesting bit of news. In any case, I am unironically excited for a reason to actually play Cyberpunk again, even if this new content is short. And the Trigger anime looks fantastic, which will be an easy binge-watch the day of release. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
