The Armadillo mods that you craft will continue to improve as you get to higher levels, continue to craft and replace them as you level up. Also focus on finding / crafting legendary quality armor with more mod slots as you process further with the Tech skill.

you shound make a pure race build (aka only the skills that are raised in the start of the game)
there is a quest with a clown, the reward is a legendary grenade crafting spec, good for cheesing in some legendary crafting parts

Btw with satori blade and full crit chance + crit damage cloth mods you can have damage up to 200k
