Cyberpunk 2077 HDR is Broken on PS5 & Xbox Series X Regardless of HDR Settings

We analysed the HDR presentation of Cyberpunk 2077 on both the Sony PS5 and the Xbox Series X using the HDR analysis toolkit on a Canon DP-V2411 4K reference monitor, and discovered the HDR black floor to be elevated (possible video level mismatch in game tone-mapper?), and many clues suggesting that it may be scaled from an SDR base.

Problems with the in-game [HDR Settings]:

1) Increasing [Maximum Brightness] will scale entire HDR picture and brighten the midtones plus shadows in an almost linear manner, leading to an overexposed picture with little depth;

2) Reducing [Tone-Mapping Midpoint] is essential to achieve deeper blacks, but doing so will also darken midtones (and if excessively, the highlights) and shadows, causing an unnatural transition from shadows/ midtones to bright highlights.

Using [Black Level] “Low” on TVs (video range) together with [RGB Range] “High” or “Full” on consoles would make blacks inky, but would also crush a significant amount of shadow detail, and so is not an acceptable solution.

For the best picture quality while playing Cyberpunk 2077 (CB77), we strongly suggest playing the game in SDR.

  1. Found my PS4 pro works best on my LG OLED with no HDR, turn off Film Grain and Chromatic Aberration. Then set my tv settings to Expert Dark Room. This keeps the colour and gives you nice depth in the shadows. And tweak the gamma to suit. Bit of a joke really that we still need to figure this stuff out.

  2. Really good and easy to understand information! It would be interesting with a comment regarding which of the following two options gives the best visual quality:
    1. PS5 Auto HDR + SDR in Cyberpunk
    2. PS5 SDR + SDR in Cyberpunk

    Cheers!

  3. Deliberately held off buying this game until it's fixed. So we have RDR2 all over again. I bought that game at launch and despite considering myself a layman, immediately realised that the HDR was FUBAR. Amazing how many games journalists and HDR advocates failed to spot this though. Good jobs channels such as this do the real work, as the snooty journo crowd wouldn't believe plebs like me otherwise.

  4. I tried it today on PC and promptly turned it off, it really does wash out, contrast goes down, blacks start looking grey, it seems to have to opposite effect to what it should almost

  5. I must have spent hours trying to tune my HDR settings in this game. However, im on pc using an RTX 3090 and on an ASUS PG27UQ monitor. The monitor is fald, ips and hdr 1000. No matter the settings, it looks horrible.. I put my mid point to 1 and my paper white to 400 and maximum to 400.

  6. I think CDPR should have focused on the PS5, Series X, and PC. They should have forgotten about the last gen consoles. They spread themselves too thin by trying to please everyone. I hope they fix the game soon.

  7. In the first scene that's shown, are you sure that there are elements which are supposed to be truly black?
    The scene seems well lit enough so nothing is actually black.

    At 12:56 however, there are very few dark elements which are almost fully black (with no shadow being crushed)
    I wonder why you describe it as an issue instead of correct – from only watching your video.
