Gig / Side Quest: “Fixer, Merc, Soldier, Spy”
Overview: Steal a Data Shard from Mikhail Akulov
No Kills, No Takedowns, No Alarms, No Detects

Despite looking like there’s not much ‘gameplay’ here, I love this mission. I consider this the kind of design you would want to see in immersive sims or RPGs of this nature; something that rewards you for the investments you’ve previously made in your character, while still presenting some kind of task to overcome using who exactly you’ve had them become.

Here, V comes from the Street Kid Lifepath, which allows me to begin a special dialogue via bluffing and intuition of how the drug trade works and is ‘acted out’ in Night City. Next up, V’s high Intelligence Attribute comes into play, when instead of paying the concierge bribe money, V chooses to subtly hack the nearby screen and Distract him with his strong knowledge of computers.

In Mikhail’s penthouse, both Mikhail and Nadezhda, a bodyguard of his, are tensely discussing a negotiation surrounding the very same Data Shard that V has been tasked with stealing. Here, V’s netrunning skills come into play once more. By letting Mikhail walk out onto the balcony, and hacking the nearby Camera to treat himself as Friendly, V can take the final step of temporarily disabling Nadezhda’s ocular implants — something which will be waved off as a glitch — before claiming the Data Shard and leaving.

When closing the deal with the Chinese, maintaining the appropriate mercenary professionalism ensures everything goes smoothly.

This little mission would be a simple chest, or a room full of guys in most games, without as much narrative context surrounding it. To be sure, Cyberpunk 2077 still features a bunch of missions and activities that are exactly like that, but there are so, so many of these too, each of which presents a fascinating short story in the Anthology that is Night City, and lets you finish them with the kind of character you’ve chosen to develop.

  2. This game has a lot of high level stealth gameplay potential, the likes I haven’t seen since Dishonored 2. Gonna be fun when I eventually do a katana wielding stealth corpo play through.

  3. Wonder if it matters that I killed both Mikhail and Nadezhda. Nadezhda got the freezer and Mikhail took a leap off the building right in front of the entrance 😉
I did it stealthy though and nothing was different with the Regina conversations so I guess I'll find out at some point. Also seems like Nadezhda wasn't going to survive anyway based on the shard found on her body in which it was implied Mikhail was probably going to go crazy on her at some point.

  5. Hi Leo, seeing that you've played both Valhalla and CyberPunk. I'd appreciate it to hear your thoughts on which game offers more freedom in terms of gameplay (flow, feel, combat, etc.) and character movement (parkour, animations, etc.).

  6. With all the memes and whining about the bugs, I'm glad that there are people either playing past them (or not experiencing them enough to hamper their over all experience), and enjoying this game. Looks like a crapload of fun! Like this felt like serious roleplaying and as always, love how your videos give that smooth and cinematic feel.

  7. As a Russian, who is yet to play CB2077, I gotta admit that the voice acting scene in this segment is SUPERB – very intense, almost cinema-quality voice acting by these actors. Good gameplay as well, Leo 😉

  8. This game is so good! Voice acting, face animations, narrative, level of details: specifically!

Imagine what game would look like after 3-4 months? Mmm…

    But I think I need new RTX3080. GTX1080 really struggling sometimes 🙁

  9. Hey, Leo, any plans on finishing the Cyberpunk series? Would love to see your take on Search and Destroy.

Nice play btw, and gotta second all those praising the writing and voice acting in this mission. CDPR clearly hired native speakers for both — you can immediately tell by the proper use of Russian expletives 🙂

Also, have to compliment your camera work on all those videos: the analogue movement with controller makes for a very pleasant viewing.

  10. I made small talk with the agents on both my playthroughs because I was so used to picking optional dialogue before the yellow to continue. Both times I listened to Regina and knew not to but did it from muscle memory anyway lol.
