This is an article about hacking a Baofeng UV-5R to look and act like a radio from the Cyberpunk 2077 Universe. It is a neat idea that I hope to see come to life.

  1. Yeah, the UV-5R was my gateway drug – it let me try out this new hobby to see if I liked it without going broke. Turns out, I do like it! People say it's cheap Chinese junk, but it got me on the air and now I'm using expensive Japanese junk! So I'm much better now, I guess.

That yellow oled display was hauntingly intriguing. I don't know why I like it, but I do. Let us know if you get this functional game prop working.

  2. Baofeng really took the market.
The tri band radios used to be 400 dollars
Now the UV-5R is 25 dollars
We need baofeng to build a Phase 2 Digital Simulcast scanner that does DMR and phase 1 & 2 Digital for under 100 dollars.
These scanners are 500 dollars, just like the tri band ham radios were and having a UV-5R that is a DMR 2 slot true DMR two way radio, I know they can make a DMR scanner
Phase 2 digital simulcast is very similar to DMR 2 slot

They absolutely need to make a scanner to corner the scanner market. If the had a 100 dollar scanner they could take 90% of Whisler and Uniden's business
Someone who has contacts in Baofeng need to talk to them about doing this.

  3. KQ4KJL As a newbie license holder, I've been watching "best of" videos for suggestions for a first radio. I don't think I want to start with something I'll need to upgrade right out of the box.

  4. Thats funny, cuz my first radio was the QRZ-1 Explorer from Gigaparts. Just recently bought the FCC approved GT-5R and that thing works great. Nice little go bag radio or back up. I do have two Yaesu's and an Icom 2m only.

  5. I agree, a Baofeng is a great way for a newly licensed Tech to get on the air and determine whether or not they are hooked enough to continue further along in the hobby with equipment upgrades. The reason why Baofeng's are hated is because there are so many out there that are "dirty radios".

I bought the GT-5R version from Radioddity for just that reason, it's a clean radio. I did a heck of a lot with that radio in the first 6 months after getting that radio. I used it at home with a TRAM 1180 dual band NMO mobile antenna and a Nagoya GPK-01 NMO Mount Ground Plane Kit, bolted to a Harbor Freight 20ft. aluminum telescopic flag pole in a tripod mount on my upper balcony. Then by lowering the mast and unscrewing the mobile antenna from that, on to a NMO Mag mount base I was set for mobile use in my truck. For about $200 I had a setup that worked well and would continue to do so after I bought a 50w dual band mobile, that served as both my "base" and mobile radio.

Those HF aluminum telescopic flagpoles are very inexpensive at $70 (even less with a coupon), and versatile. In the RV world they are commonly known as a great platform for Starlink and other Sat dish antennas… I'm surprised that they aren't as well known or used in the Ham radio world. 73 de KN6VMK

  6. Modding, hacking, and other homebrew improvements are always an interesting addition to any hobby. Maybe you could dedicate a show once a month to let people show off their cool ham related hacks and mods. Personally, I'd like to see a show like that once a week, but even once a month would be pretty awesome. Thanks for the video.

  7. for the money you can not beat the baofeng UV-5R . Baofeng is helping more people to get in HAM radio. for so many cost was a factor. now the UV-5R is the most sold HT ever. Now Baofeng has hit the GMRS market and they work great. helping people get into GMRS as well. for the low cost of a baofeng if it breaks on a trip you do not cry as much. also you can buy several and pass them to family members friends. have emergency comms. I am hearring stories that Baofeng has saved lives. I take my Baofeng on camping trips, state fair ,parks, bottom line Baofeng gets the job done for less. 73's

  8. I disagree to a point. This varies by location. Anyone not living near a major metropolitan area ( like me and a large portion of new hams mpo) really should start with a 50w mobile. For the simple fact that only being able to hit one repeater and that's a maybe is way more frustrating than being able to hit say 3 or more. I feel this gives them a better chance to become engaged with the local ham community and thus increasing their likelihood of staying involved.
