AMD FidelityFX SuperResolution 2.1 was finally added to Cyberpunk 2077 in patch 1.61. We can now take a deep dive into its image quality in this game vs DLSS as well as vs native rendering (and even a bit of FSR 1.0). We can also look a the performance on popular AMD GPUs like the RX 6800 XT and RX 6600 XT.

fsr is super cool especially if you have a steam deck 800p fits the screen great and fsr dont look bad
1060… I got you some aid… Can you maybe work with that?
I updated the game last night and i wanted to try it on my RX 6600 and 2560x1440p display. I must say that i was impressed, i couldn't notice any difference between native and fsr quality (my display is 24 inches so maybe the pixel dencity also helps here), the fps was much higher and i couldn't spot any major problems. Great job CDPR
Dang, there must be more to that Cyberpunk patch than just FSR update. Running at 1440p on an admittedly older RX 580 4gb with FSR 1.0 performance I was getting average 53 FPS with the optimized settings that I have been using. I then upgraded the game and ran same benchmark with FSR 2.1 performance and now I am getting 35 average. Interestingly, balanced got me 31 average though there was a lot of stuttering, and ultra performance made everything look like potato and brought me down to 18 FPS wtf?! Not a big deal for me since I have been holding off on actually playing this game until I upgrade to the 7900 xtx, but if I was going hard into this game and got this update without plans to upgrade I would be screaming at the devs right now.

You can see, that Arrow on yellow sign (bottom) has shimmering in BOTH upscalers. FSR has it first, but as we get closer, DLSS has it too (while FSR is stable).
Overall, FSR 2.1 is basically the same as DLSS 2.3.4. Both has issues, but in different scenes. Which is interesting (and funny)
Besides the shimmering which both DLSS and FSR exhibit in different places in the same scene, I have to be honest with you. In reality I don't see the difference between the two especially when in motion.
Both seems to have pros and cons, but performance is similar enough and you really need to look for the issues instead of them getting right into your face.
Sure DLSS seems to be better, but we are talking about difference here between 98,7 vs 100 and really they both exhibit something that can be noticed at some point, but without next to each other I honestly can't tell the difference.
EDIT: And when you are talking about stability and the fences I have trouble seeing what you are talking about even when slowing down the video.
And to be fare if it is this difficult to see the differences then FSR works well enough and again we are splitting hares here.
Dude, you rock. Great comparison. 🤙🏼
He is pixel picking for content. We all know there is NO difference in that image, don't forget it's a game not a picture. You don't stop in the middle of your game to analyze flower. Crazy
Thank you Daniel for all your time creating great content
actually playing the game and not looking for image glitches both are perfectly working solutions. Nvidia folks will always argue that dlss is better just to justify the nvidia price premium. AMD has worked out (or copied) almost every software advantage that nvidia had, now nvidia only has RT which IMO doesn't justify the price gap.
For someone like me who's playing this game on a Potato PC thus new update has let me to play the game on high setting at 1080p full res with decent Fram rate , FRS 2.1 is a God safe in my case . For the first time I'm able to turn a few setting on high and no longer playing the game at lower rest borderless at medium or low gone are the aetifacting maybe occasionally but not as bad as it use to be 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 next year I'll be building a new PC and hopefully the melting issue of the 4090 would have been resolved otherwise the 7900xtx will be the gpu .
FSR looks like bad jpeg compression to me. It's visually identical to zooming in on a jpeg. Fuzzy. Blurry detail in motion with the artifact-y chunks everywhere. I will game without upscaling forever, but if I had to choose it'd be a no brainer to use DLSS over FSR.
Which cpu should I pair the 4090 or the 7900xtx / xt with ??
I feel like fsr personally is usually sharper overall. But dlss is a more stable reconstruction.
This is actually huge. Does it make up for AMD's horrific raytracing that they just seemed to ignore again this generation and instead said "Eh, we'll just brute force it once our drivers get the right performance at 2.7-2.8ghz…" which obviously never happened and left them completely screwed trying to sell $600 and $700 dollar cards for $900 and $1000. Yeah, I want a thousand dollar card to play 1440p medium with performance FSR 2.0 to get a _stable 45-60 FPS…Ugh. Still, the fact that they got a company to put it in the game post launch really is huge and will allow people who play cinematic games to consider AMD at LOWER price tiers. $1k is just out of the question. People will either go Nvidia or just do what I'm doing and buying a 3080 12GB-3090ti as an expensive 2 year placeholder card.
AMD NEEDS to learn, people are not spending over $500 for a card that can't raytrace as well as a $500 card from last gen. Basically go price for price now with RT on and I'm guessing based off their own numbers the 7900XT performs like a 3070ti at best with RT and FSR 2.0/1 (if it is even in the game, if the game only has FSR 1.0 then forget it, it's useless and makes the game look all pastel butter smudged) while the 7900XT might match the 3080 12GB…maybe? A card that you can buy right now on eBay for $500 USD (and sometimes less). Heck, there are two 3080ti's, one Zotac and one Gigabyte selling in the next 20 minutes that are at $550 and $610 w/shipping as we speak. But they still expect these cards to sell well?
Something went horribly wrong with the design, as from what I've gathered these cards can hit 2.8ghz pretty easily, but are only seeing a 2%-3% uplift in performance. How the hell does that happen? Some are speculating that the front of the die can't feed the back of the die fast enough, which I suppose i can understand in a basic layman way, but as to why it happened I'm clueless. I doubt drivers can fix it as it seems like a HUGE design flaw, which in turn compounds their mistake of not making a concerted effort on the RT side of things. Like millions of free to play MMFPS gamers are going to run out and spend $1k on a card…in the middle of a recession. No, the people who play at a semi-pro and up level might, but they are 1 in 1k or so consumers. Cinematic A/CRPG/Story-based Platformer gamers will though. Well at a much higher rate at least, and what are they going to buy? If they are spending over $500 bucks I can almost promise that they want to be able to at least put Raytracing on their 1440p 144hz+ screen with upscaling set to quality and high graphic settings to get at least 60FPS. People spending a grand probably have decent 4k screens and they want high/quality with the 2nd highest RT setting for the game and 60 FPS. This isn't 2018. it isn't 2020 for that matter, and Nvidia made that happen back then. Yet AMD can't at the tail end of 2022? With cards releasing about 3 weeks from 2023?
For these cards to be _winners they literally need to be about $300 USD less expensive. $1k GPU purchasers are not going to pick these over their Nvidia counterparts, used and new. AMD, and a lot of reviewers have no idea how badly AMD screwed up with this. I truly wanted to buy an AMD card between $700-$1100 USD, but there doesn't appear to be a card in their lineup that can do what I want. There are cards, for less money, from Nvidia's last gen line-up that do though. It was so had for me not to bid on one of the 3080Ti's, but I am trying to hold out for benchmarks on the off chance they figure their shit out. I can't see it happening, but I am hoping. There's also the 4080 which is $100 more than I want to spend, and I feel that card should be coming in at the $1k mark itself, but there's also a decent chance i decide to go with that for a couple of years as well, all because AMD read their consumer base very wrong, botched something in thir rchitecture they didn't notice until it was just way to late, or both. And a 2.0ghz base/gaming closck on the 7900XT? This card is going to be jsut ahead of the 3090ti in rasterization, and like I said, around the 3070 once you kick on RT…Oh AMD, this is going to be painful.
It's not even like there are datacenter versions of these chips. Nope, they are made for gaming, they're coming out soon, and very, very few people will be buying them unless they get rave reviews WITH Raytracing on. _"450 FPS in Counterstroke: Global Offensive and 610 in Overwatch 2? Yeah, a million of those people are spending $1k on an AMD GPU. Or the Fortnite cats that spend $10/month on skins; yeah they are going to pony up the change to buy this over a GTX 3060 that still gets them 200 FPS.
Idk what happened behind the scenes with the RTG group, but Lisu Su and others cannot be very pleased right now. Or maybe she was, as she did set the pricing, so maybe she thinks mining is still a thing? Oh, and another huge crash today as ZTE folded. 25 Billion dollar owner has just liquidated, their token went from $3 to…$0. In 10 hours, and they have now been bought by…Binance I believe. Or Coinbase…who knows. Someone bought them and their token is at $0.00 while the man worth over 25B is now on the verge of Bankruptcy. Heck, even the stock market felt this one, and if Dems take the Senate, which it appears they will, expect higher gas prices which means more inflation, higher bills, fewer jobs, and less money for people to buy these bloody raytracing pft GPU's because people just don't care about raytracing. Of course the people saying RT doesn't either aren't in the $1000 market, are pretty much strict 1080p low on a 500hz tn panel players, or reviewers that get them for free, and also tend to play mostly FPS and racing games where no, raytracing doesn't matter very much.
Cyberpunk? it matters. The new Jedi game from EA? It matters. Starfield? I fricken matters. AMD…*IT MATTERS.* We are tired of waiting for a next gen that doesn't come. Your performance actually regressed compared to the 5k to 6k jump, and really regressed when compared to Nvidia (in regards to raytracing). Buid the cards your customers want. Th $200-$500 crowd probably doesn't care much about RT, so focus on raster cores with them. Develop better RT cores for your higher tier cards, because this really is not acceptable. Your sales numbers will reflect that.
AMD has really done a good job here. The efficiency of this solution is impressive. I am excited to see what they will do with better AI acceleration in their cards, since FSR doesn't leverage that yet
I think independent from the actual upscaling used, Reshade could fix some problems shown.
e.g FSR 2.1 looks a bit more washed out in terms of resolution, colors, maybe contrast, but there are many options to sharpen or to higher contrast in Reshade.
FSR 1.0 vs 2.1. looked like the newer 2.1. could better preserve perspective as the background seemed more pronounced.
Fog/steam particles seem to be significantly decreased in FSR 2.1 scenes vs FSR 1, Native and DLSS.
Is it just me or does FSR look more soft/lower res than DLSS?
I think you're over nitpicking on details a lot. Carpets aren't made of crisp lines and illuminated displays aren't supposed to be crisp fake light. Besides in Cyberpunk everything is supposed to look worn out and tired
I have been looking at the 6800XT for a while now. I think it's a great card for a fairly reasonable price, if you are not concerned about RT. Especially for myself at 3440×1440 and about to stay on AM4 with an upgrade from a old 1600>5600 cpu. I will still probably wait and see what the prices do and possibly leaked info for the AMD and Nvidia GPU/mid range stack.
